Venom & RipTide: A Guide to Aftermarket Longboard Bushings

It can be difficult to find a bushing setup that works well for you as a rider. With so many different brands to choose from, it can be difficult to separate the high-quality products from the low-quality products. Here is a brief explanation of the bushing formulas offered by two of the most important brands in the industry: Venom and RipTide. Between these two brands, it’s pretty much a guarantee that you’ll find the right combination of aftermarket bushings to make your setup perfect. Both brands are at the forefront of aftermarket urethane products and have something unique about each formula and shape.

Bushing options

Poison:

Venom bushings are arguably the most commonly used bushings on the market due to their quality and reliability. Between the HPF and SHR formulas in all the different forms they offer, there is something for every rider from beginner to advanced.

Venom HPF: The Venom HPF formula bushings are one of the most common choices for beginner to intermediate riders. While these bushings are the undisputed favorites of the advanced “core” downhill community, their consistent rebound (or return-to-center) to lean (squirt) ratio gives them a predictable twist that makes turning, carving, and bombing a breeze to learn. the mountains are very accessible. At the same time, these are options for advanced skaters all over the world.

Venom SHR: Although often overlooked, the Venom SHR bushings are a great choice for more advanced downhill riders who want more responsiveness in their setup, or avid cruisers/carvers/slalomers who want their turns and carves to really pop. With a higher rebound formula, SHRs have a more aggressive return to center while having a “softer” and “twitchy” feel. With the Venom SHR, the durometer that the rider typically rides in the HPF formula seems to be about one durometer option softer (eg, a 91a SHR feels about as soft as an 87a HPF).

RipTide:

RipTide is a company with a large loyal following. They offer a variety of urethane formulas and tread styles that can be used for many different riding styles and ability levels. While there are many options, any avid RipTide rider will tell you that it pays to figure out what works best for you. RipTide are generally sought after for their specificity and high quality.

RipTide APS: The APS formula offers a happy medium in terms of rebound in Riptide’s formula choices. While these bushings offer similar return to center and stability as the Venom FPS formula, they offer a slightly “softer” and more “turny” feel, which is ideal for riders who enjoy these characteristics. The APS formula is one of the best choices for beginner riders due to their happy medium between rebound and compression. However, the APS formula is also loved by advanced riders, which shows that APS bushings are extremely versatile.

RipTide WFB: This formula contains a self-lubricating compound, so there is some residue on the outside of the bushing. This lubrication creates less drag and therefore provides a deeper lean and faster transition. WFB offers lower recoil than APS, making it ideal for riders who want extra smooth deep turns. For this reason, WFB is a good choice for intermediate and advanced riders who want additional control over their bushings.

RipTide Krank: This is RipTide’s highest rebound formula. Compared to APS and WFB, this formula rotates the least and has a very fast and sensitive return to center. When riding loose for travel and carving, their high rebound formula retracts easily but snaps back to center very quickly, making the formula ideal for pumping and high-energy carving. When dialed down tight for downhill riding, this formula offers excellent stability and a quick transition from turn to lift. These bushings are usually best for advanced players or those who like extremely lively carving/turning.

On mixing and matching brands/formulas:

A bushing connoisseur who wants to dial in each setting as accurately as possible may choose to explore mixing bushing brands and formulas to achieve the perfect lean-to-rebound ratio. It can be an extremely rewarding process when properly tested, but it can also be challenging. If you choose to go this route, it is always recommended to place the higher recoil bushing near the table and the lower recoil bushing near the road. This allows the turn to start easier at the beginning of the turn and provides more resistance as the rider leans deeper into the turn.

From least recoil to most recoil, the bushing options above are: RipTide WFB, RipTide APS, Venom HPF, Venom SHR, Riptide Krank.

Success! Experimentation is the best way to find out which setup works for you!
