5 Step Coaching Formula For Giving Yourself a Raise – Pain, Solution, Process, Mentor, & Action
I was in some severe pain. I lost all my clients in one day. I received a letter saying that the person who gave me access to the franchise owners of a large promotional products company no longer works at the corporate office. He had become a franchise owner himself. He was replaced by someone who wanted to take a different direction – and that included a decision not to use my services.
1. Identify the pain
What was my pain?
Here I was, a single mother with three children, a mortgage to pay, and I had just lost my source of income!
The real problem was that I had no idea how to get clients out of the relationships I had built at my former company as a promotional product distributor. I had no income and no idea how to get clients for my coaching business – and that was just the beginning of the current “slump” we’re in. All I saw was that NO ONE was spending money.
2. Identify the solution
I realized that I needed to find clients who were already looking for a coach instead of trying to convince someone they should hire me when they might not have realized they needed a coach yet.
Before I could find clients who were already looking for me (or at least already looking for life success solutions) and possibly a life success coach, I had to define how to actually do this on a larger scale than just my circle. influence – people I perceived as “not spending money”. What I needed someone to create a road map or a set of instructions to follow for my ideal prospect to find me.
3. Identify the block
The day I sat there with the letter from the corporate office in my hand, I was overcome with fear. What if I can’t find new customers? What if I can’t find the right guidance to help me understand what to do and how to reach people who were already looking for…someone – someone…who was looking for success training in life?
After I sold my promotional products company and took on clients in the industry, I had never ventured into uncharted territory until the day I received this letter, when I forced to figure out what to do next.
4. Identify the process
So far all I knew was, “What next?”
- I needed to create an income for myself and the kids, and fast!
- I needed to find prospects and clients with money to invest who were looking for what I offer as a coach in a larger sphere of influence.
- I needed to overcome this fear of unknown territory, how to find clients outside of the field I had just spent 16 years of my adulthood in.
- I needed a plan of action and a process I could follow from someone who has successfully found clients using the same plan.
In process discovery
I had learned and applied practices from several sites on the internet while building my promotional products business, so I had a really good place to start. I went back to find many people whose material had already worked for me.
I soon discovered that online marketing had changed a lot in about a year. I needed to educate myself on many more tools that I hadn’t used in my promotional products business. Things like blogs, social bookmarking, social networking, article marketing were all new to me. On my own dabbed in each of them and was not very impressed with the results.
I posted my blog and looked at my stats, but I got no visitors. I used social bookmarking for personal benefit to find and remember sites that were valuable to me. I didn’t understand how and why to share links.
One thing I did that got me some interesting results was starting my own internet radio show. I was emboldened enough to start inviting a group of people whose materials—emails, telecourses, and blogs—I learned from to join me as guests on their show. I actually started two shows – both started growing a following. At first I didn’t know I could read the stats on TalkShoe.com to see how many people downloaded my show from the archives. Sometimes I would record the show and no one but the guest and I would be on the call – but after the show was recorded, hundreds of people would download the show every week!
Although I had discovered something that eventually got attention and even attracted clients from my radio show – it was hit or miss at best.
I needed a more consistent process that would work consistently – and work whether I was working or not – 24/7 every day! As a coach myself, I knew the best use of my time would be to find a mentor, a coach, who had found a way to bring clients to them with a process I could learn and duplicate.
One day I was invited to participate in a program that would change my life. It was a 60-day commitment that amounted to about two hours a day. I almost didn’t. I almost said I didn’t have time because I was too busy trying to build my coaching business.
This program gave me an opportunity look under the hoodto see, so to speak the engine of thriving online marketing in practice and step by step to make the practice work for you. It changed everything for me. Everything. I will always be grateful to the person who started this program.
5. From process to action
I see a lot of coaches doing what I started until I figured out the step-by-step process of running my business so that it would attract my ideal client – and that’s rummaging at all stages, never understand how they all work together.
Even worse, I know many coaches who know they should be doing certain things, but don’t even do what they know consistently. If every one of my businesses fails, I know that I have not consistently done for myself what I know and teach my clients.
You have to start applying what you know and discovering what you don’t know – and that’s easier with a coach or mentor guiding them along the path they’ve taken.
This story describes a practice that can be used in many different situations to create a successful outcome in the midst of change. These simple steps can help you take your coaching practice forward:
