Guide to Virtonomics
If you’re a fan of the popular business simulation game Capitalism II released in 2011, imagine playing something very similar, with a lot more features… and with real players from all over the world. This article will teach you how to navigate… and survive in Virtonomics with retail stores.
So winning back in Capitalism II was easy because once you understood how the computer AI worked, the rest just copied your formula again. But can you do the same with a game with real people behind the monitor?
If you thought the answer was no, you’re wrong! Actually it’s still the same – YES you can. The key to winning the business game, be it offline or online, is to treat it like your business.
First, you need a business plan. You need to know the path you should take to build a very big business in Virtonomics. I know some players who first started by building factories, became a supplier and later tried to dominate the market of a particular industry. I would call it a back road. And then I know some players who would do market research and later decide to open retail stores first, managing their own suppliers and retail stores. This is what I would call the front end. Personally, I would prefer to start with the front-end movement, as this path requires much, much less capital.
Overall, my business plan was to create a positive and consistent revenue stream through the front end, then focus on the back end to lower my costs in producing my goods (thus increasing my profits). Ultimately, labs should be built to research (and sell) new technologies to improve the quality of goods.
Now that we have decided to use the front end, let’s start with market research. You can do this via [Game] -> [Report]. Select the country/city and the product you want to sell. Pay attention to two important things here:
1. Local supplier information
2. Store information
Local suppliers in Virtonomics would mean companies operating in the market that are not controlled by the players. Stores would mean those controlled by the players.
Essentially, you want to have a leg up on local suppliers. It can be the same price but better quality of products. Review the list of suppliers you have access to and select your products from there.
Another thing you want to note is the location of the store. Customers shopping in the city center care more about quality than price compared to customers shopping in the suburbs. Also note the country’s wealth index. In rich countries, quality is generally preferred over price.
Repeat this step for all products.
Once you have identified good markets for your business to enter, build an office in that area. Equip your office with appropriate staff and computer equipment. Next, build a 500 square meter retail store downtown. As in your office, hire some staff to maintain your retail store.
Choose your supplier and buy your stock from them. Note that you should only stick to one department (same product line) to begin with. Also note that accessories will only come after one game update, so don’t worry if you don’t see your inventory in your store yet!
As you might expect, the final step would be to set the prices for your items. This can be a bit intimidating for new players, but luckily Virtonomics offers some really good reports to help you get going. Go to the market report again and this time select your country/city. Here’s how I recommend you set up your pricing.
Your selling price = local suppliers’ price * (your item quality / local suppliers’ item quality)^0.5
Prices should be reviewed for each country. As a general rule, the selling price should be increased by 30% for very wealthy countries, and by about 30% when selling the same item in poor countries. You should adjust it as you see fit.
This is basically what you need to do to set up and manage your retail store. Repeat the same for other retail stores in different countries and note that you may get the same items and the same price from the same suppliers, but you may be charged different fees due to different customs/delivery fees. Also adjust your prices accordingly.
Now wait for the game update, your goods should arrive and your shops are ready for new customers! If you have a stable income stream, you can consider increasing the size of your stores or doing simple marketing advertising campaigns to increase the number of customers in your store.
In the next article, I’ll discuss my strategies (and some theories) for store optimization, operational efficiency, and gaining an edge over your peers.
