Excel Tip – Find All Cells With A Certain Type Of Formatting – With This Cool Find Trick!
This is a really cool Excel trick that can potentially save you a ton of time.
You are probably already familiar with Excel’s Find and Replace function, which is used to directly find or replace text and numbers in a worksheet by following these instructions.
-
To search data from a worksheet or an entire workbook Inside box, select Page or Workbook.
-
To search for data in specific rows or columns, use Search box, click By rows or By columns.
-
Use the section to search for data with specific details Look inside box, click Formulas, Valuesor comments.
-
Select to search for case-sensitive data Matchbox checkbox.
-
To search for cells that contain only the characters you enter Find what select from the box Match all cell contents checkbox.
However, there is also a function to find all cells in a worksheet that are formatted in a certain way or meet certain formatting criteria. We can then change all of these cells at once and update them in one operation.
Here is a step-by-step guide.
-
First, open the Find dialog box by pressing CTRL+F
-
Click the Options button so we can find the format in the worksheet
-
Select the format you want to search for by selecting a format from the Choose format box
-
Go ahead and click on the cell that is formatted the way you want to search the worksheet
-
Click Find All – Excel will show you a preview of the format
-
Press CTRL+A to select ALL the cells that Excel found with this format, they will be highlighted in the results area at the bottom of the Find and Replace dialog box.
In my example, I want to select all cells with black bold text and an orange background. Once all the cells are selected, I can override the formatting style
-
Once you’ve selected all the cells that Excel has found with formatting, the Find and Replace dialog box will select – all cells are still selected when you press Close
-
Go ahead and change the selected cells to the new formatting style you want
-
The new style is automatically applied to all selected cells
Work done in a few clicks.
