4 P’s for Effective Prayer

The problem with our praying is that we only do it as a last resort. ~ Will Rogers

What happens when you’re faced with a situation that seems insurmountable? How do you cope when life suddenly turns upside down? Or when it feels like you’ll never get where you want to go? Maybe you’re struggling to get out of debt, regain your health, or deal with the devastation of a bad relationship or the loss of a loved one.

Are you ranting and raving about the injustice of it all? Do you throw up your hands, sigh and ‘accept the inevitable’? Maybe you sit down and cry, wasting your precious energy on your own pity party.

I would like to offer you a different option. Effective prayer.

The effectual, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much (James 5:16). The Amplified Bible puts it this way: The (heartfelt, continuous) prayer of a righteous man makes tremendous power available [dynamic in its working].

A dynamo is a generator that creates a lot of power. It also means vigorous and energetic. Wouldn’t you like to have a dynamic force working for you in these situations? Well, you can.

I’d like to share four steps you can take to eliminate these negative circumstances.

Preparation: Everything in life requires preparation. You can’t fix food without putting together the right ingredients and utensils. You can’t drive a car unless it’s full of fuel and ready. Faith is the same way. You cannot use it effectively unless you are prepared to use it properly. But preparation—the development of faith—is usually the most neglected part of the Christian life because it takes time.

The Bible says ‘faith comes by hearing’ (Romans 10:17). Hearing the word, studying it and meditating on it, building your steadfast trust in it is the “fuel” that makes the engine of faith run. If there is nothing in your faith tank, your prayer is weak. If you cannot believe that what you are asking for is possible (remember, “With God nothing is impossible”! – Luke 1:37), you will not ignite the spiritual strength you need to overcome your current circumstances.

Prayer: If fuel is preparation, ignition switch is prayer. The prayer says “GO”. The words spoken in your faith give your High Priest Jesus something to recite. He is author and finisher of your faith. Prayer alerts angels to work for you (see Hebrews 1:14). It begins the process of transferring blessing, healing, abundance—whatever you need—from spiritual promise to physical manifestation.

Effective prayer mimics God’s promises by repeating back to Him what He has already promised you. It makes you agree with His Word. If you remain in agreement with Him without giving up or doubting, He can confirm your words, making them effective. Remember, a double-minded man (seeing between faith and doubt or fear) cannot hope to receive anything (James 1:7-8).

Patience: The transfer of blessings from the spiritual realm to the natural realm usually takes time. Decide to go the distance. Patience is your cruise control. Let patience work perfectly so that you can be perfect and whole, wanting nothing. (James 1:4) Determine your faith and do not waver. It may seem like it takes “forever,” but as long as you believe, God will move you and your circumstances toward your final destination. If you stay on track, you’ll eventually get where you want to go!

Avoid the pits and detours of doubt, fear, disappointment, unforgiveness, regret and envy. Keep your words positive and focused, backed up by actions that demonstrate and support the goals of your faith. Patience is not giving up – “Oh well, maybe someday it will happen.” It is a powerful partner of faith determined to “go the distance” until you actually have what you believed.

Durability: Persistence becomes your journey, plan or goal. It goes hand in hand with patience. When we were traveling cross-country, we didn’t give up and wonder if we should change our plans or give up and stay home. We knew what we wanted to see and do – and what time and money it would take. We were committed.

We actually started planning months in advance (preparation). We stayed focused on the plan. We didn’t shy away from spending our travel money on other good things. Heading to the Rockies, we didn’t book hotels on the east coast. We thought, talked and acted according to our plan. We persevere until the end of the trip. Perseverance keeps you standing in the faith, making positive confessions, and working toward the results you want.

Now here’s the fuel supplement – gratitude. Thank God in advance for the thing you believe. Believe that you mean what you say and you mean what you say you believe. (See Mark 11:24) If you really BELIEVE when you pray, you can praise God for it before you see the result. Gratitude and praise keep your faith moving smoothly toward your goal.

These four steps are the formula for answered prayer. When you combine your fuel, kindling, direction, and action into the right mix (preparation, prayer, patience, and perseverance) and pour in plenty of gratitude and praise, you will get where you want to go. You will never be “under the circumstances” again. Instead, you are on your way to victory and blessing.
