Digestive Enzymes – What Are Digestive Enzymes?

What are digestive enzymes? Digestive enzymes are protein molecules that help break down food. They are catalysts, which means they speed up the rate of chemical reactions. Enzymes are involved in breaking down food from complex molecules into simple molecules so they can be absorbed into the blood. In short, digestive enzymes help the body digest and utilize nutrients from the food we consume.

Throughout my ever-changing health and wellness journey, I am constantly striving to find what is needed for optimal success. From the type of exercise, the food (aka nutrition) I eat, recovery and supplements. My great friend Ashley McTucker introduced me to basic health products. He told me how amazing he felt after taking them, how he felt different after meals, and how HUGE it is that we get enzymes in our food.

I bet you’re asking, “What does this have to do with me, Carter? Why do I care what digestive enzymes are?” Well, I’m going to answer that. You see, my passion is to share what I believe to be invaluable information regarding the health and well-being of our success. Nutrition is a HUGE part of our success! After all, all the food we eat is the fuel our bodies need to survive/perform. But there is one big area that most of us fail (or don’t understand) – there is a HUGE DIFFERENCE between consuming great nutrition and eating great nutrition.

Any raw food we consume is full of enzymes. All raw foods: fruits, vegetables, raw grains, raw meat – whatever is full of enzymes. Think of it this way: Have you ever left a piece of food outside in the warm air? For the sake of this conversation, imagine you left a banana outside on a park bench. You come back in 3 or 4 hours and what happened to that banana? It will start to turn brown. Some people call it putrefaction, some call it oxidation, but what actually happens in the heat of the sun is that it activates the food’s digestive enzymes, which begin to break down the nutrients into their usable forms. Thus, food helps our body to use and digest it properly.

But every time you cook or process food, you kill all the digestive enzymes in the food. The magic number is 118 degrees. Anything at or above 118 degrees will kill all digestion in that (or all) foods. So if we put raw foods out, come back later, the enzymes have started to digest it and the food becomes softer. On the other hand, when you prepare cooked or processed foods (Big Macs, Twinkies, breads, or even healthy foods like baked potatoes or steamed vegetables), we see those foods become harder, not softer. Thus, there are no digestive enzymes to help break down the food, and therefore the ability to digest and absorb it is limited.

So now let’s apply it to our body. Let’s take the previous example of a banana and now let’s eat it. The enzymes in the banana are there, and the body’s heat and hydrochloric acid begin to activate the digestive enzymes. Enzymes literally begin to break down the food into a usable form.

Now cooked/processed foods without enzymes will not help break down the food. The body is then forced to secrete more acid and produce more enzymes from the pancreas. But we know this is very LIMITED digestion. Therefore, the body cannot use the full amount of these nutrients.

This is where my previous statement comes into play: there is a HUGE difference between consuming nutrients and using them. It’s the little “things” that add up over time that make BIG changes.

I don’t know about you, but I don’t like the idea of ​​eating raw turkey or chicken. So I cook my own food. And I KNOW it’s well over 118 degrees! This is why I am a believer in basic health products. Adding these supplements to my meals ensures I’m getting the nutrition I’m eating (even with cooked/processed foods!).
