Excel Tip – Using Names To Quickly Navigate Your Excel Work Book

By naming a cell range, function, constant or table in Excel, we can make our lives much easier in many ways.

Naming the cells we can give formulas context and meaning for example – let’s take a simple formula

=SUM(A2:A13) which would mean a lot more to us if it were written out

=SUM(amount of monthly sales). Just by naming the monthly sales cells, we can make this formula much more understandable.

We can also name cells or ranges so we can move around the workbook quickly, especially if it’s a large one with multiple worksheets. Simply click the drop down arrow in the name box to go directly to the areas named in our worksheets.

Actually we can create two types of names, the first is a Defined name that applies to a cell, range of cells, formula, or constant value is another type of a The name of the table.

Excel creates a default Excel table name of Table1, Table2, etc. every time you insert an Excel table, but you can change the table name to make it more meaningful to you.

Let’s create a name for the formula as well as the table and see how we can easily navigate our Excel workbook.

First we name the table. My Excel worksheet has a reference table with building construction types. By default, Excel has named this table Table1, but to make it more meaningful, I want to call it Construction Building Type.

By default, Excel has named this table 4. There are 2x methods to change the name using the name manager or the name box. For table we use name manager-

• Formulas tab

• Name manager

• Select a table

• Click the Edit button

• Rename the table. I have decided to name it house building type

Let’s move on to the name cell reference. Let’s name the cell that is the sales tax rate located in another area of our workbook. To name this cell, we use another method that uses a name box. To name this range, all we have to do is type the name into the box and press enter, which will automatically name the cell.

The cell is now named. This way we can move around the workbook really quickly. To jump directly to the named area, simply press the drop-down arrow in the name box.
