Excel Formula Tip – Calculate How Many Days Until The End Of A Sales Campaign Using IF and DATEDIF

This question was sent to me by one of my website visitors. How to calculate how many days until the end of the campaign?

Easy enough to start with as we can calculate the difference between today’s date and the end of the campaign.

But what if the campaign hadn’t started yet… ah hah, I feel the IF formula coming… and we mix it up with the DATEDIF formula.

The logic in a nutshell is,

If the start date of the campaign is later, count the number of days between the start and end date, but if the start date of the campaign is earlier than today’s date, count the number of days from today until the end of the campaign.

Let’s let Excel work it out for us using the IF and DATEDIF examples.

Blue moon

Start date 27/02/2015

End date 01.04.2015

Days left until the end of the campaign 31

Yellow carpet

Start date 04/01/2015

End date 01.08.2015

122 days left until the end of the campaign

I have a couple of campaigns in my example above, using the IF function I test two conditions true and false. In this example, I want to test if the campaign start is after today

=IF(STARTDATE>TODAY()- this is the first part of the formula

The second part shows the difference in days between the start date and the end date of the campaign IF the campaign has not yet started, that is, if the condition in the first part of the formula is TRUE.

DATEDIF(STARTDATE, ENDDATE″D”)

The third part of the formula displays the difference in days between today and the end of the campaign, if the campaign start date is not later than today, that is, if the condition is FALSE. The DATEDIF part of the formula simply calculates the number of days using “D” time units from one date to another.

DATE(TODAY(),ENDDATE,”D”))

So in my campaigns above

  • The Blue Moon starts today, so the difference between the start and end dates is 33 days

  • Yellow Carpet does not start until 01.04.2015 and ends on 01.08.2015, so it lasts 122 days

  • The formula looks like this

=IF(START DATE>TODAY(DATE DIF(START DATE,END DATE,”D”),DATE GO)TODAY(),END DATE,”D”))

The DATEDIF function is missing if you use the Insert function in Excel or search for it manually by typing DATED directly into the cell. Excel doesn’t seem to support it, but it does. This is a must have in your Excel toolkit.
