How The Haka Can Change Your Life

How is it that from an island nation of about 4 million people, New Zealand produces such an outstanding rugby team year after year? In many cases, other rugby teams are just as talented and prepared. So what is it and how can you use it to consistently perform at your best and excel in your career, relationships and life?

I believe the answer lies in our psychology; the vast majority of things we do in our lives come from our psychology, the rest is just mechanics. Let me ask you a question… Have you ever dragged yourself out of bed exhausted? Rubbing the place stumbling the sleep out of your eyes, dragging your feet into the bathroom, yawning so hard you think your jaw might crack? What is your energy level? What do you tell yourself? Maybe: “Not another bloody day at work, I wish I could stay in bed!” What do you focus on? Is it in the fight you had with your partner the night before? Dreading another day of working for a boss you really can’t stand? And now the big question… what kind of day do you think awaits a person in that state of mind?

Can you imagine the All Blacks going out to play a test match in this condition? You don’t need to be a genius to predict the outcome. What about our friend who manages to get himself to work on time? I imagine his work is less than productive, his communication style unremarkable, and his output marginal at best.

So how can we perform at our best every day, day in and day out? We need to perform our own personal Haka to help bring us into a state of absolute insane physical, emotional and spiritual energy.

The Empowerment Triangle

Our country is run by three things at the same time and they are:

  1. The language we use and what we say to ourselves;

  2. What we focus on; and

  3. How we move our bodies.

Self-talk

Everyone has mental chatter. Mine just has an Irish accent! There are even some people out there who are reading this right now and thinking to themselves, “This guy is crazy! Talk to yourself? I’m not talking to myself!” Whether we are aware of it or not, we are constantly in a private dialogue with ourselves. Unfortunately, most of us say things that are unhelpful and negative, leading us to places we don’t want to be. Imagine for a moment Richie McCaw doing the Haka and thinking to himself, “Jeez, that’s a pretty big opposing team, they look pretty nervous. I don’t think we’re going to be able to break through this defense. I hope we don’t drop the ball or put it under the posts penalty.” How well do you think his game is going?

Words have meaning, they create thoughts and associations, and therefore changing our language also changes the emotions we experience. Here’s a simple formula to remember:

Thought -> Emotion -> Action -> Result

If you want better results in your life, choose your language (and your thoughts) very carefully.

Focus

It is known that depressed people tend to focus on past failures or past experiences that were painful to them at the time. They hold on to these painful experiences, relive them and create scripts or stories about why they can’t move on, why they aren’t good enough or worthy enough to live a happy life.

Such a life would be like driving a car looking only in the rearview mirror.

I recently did a fire walk, but walking barefoot over burning coals was not a big deal for me. What stood out to me was the powerful metaphor that the firewalk represented. First, if walking on coals without burning is impossible, with the right focus anything is possible. But there’s more! The most important lesson for me was that in life it is important to focus on the end result and not on the obstacle that awaits you. If your attention is drawn to the smell of burning flesh, you will never make the first move. The only way to get over the burning pit is to focus only on celebrating what you will do when you get to the other side and walk very intentionally in that direction. What results can you focus on in your life to help you overcome the burning coals (fears) in your path?

Physical movement

Changes in how we move our bodies directly affect our emotional states. For example, the physiology of a depressed person is different from that of a person who has just won the lottery! Dropping your shoulders, lowering your head, breathing shallower, and letting your facial muscles drop will literally “trigger” the emotions associated with depression! Conversely, standing tall, holding your head up, breathing deeply, and moving in a positive and empowering way trigger emotions that move us into a state of empowerment where you feel like you can overcome any challenge…and do it instantly!

For me, the Haka is the perfect metaphor for getting yourself to the top. It’s the perfect ritual to turn our mental chatter positive, shift our focus to what’s ahead, and shift our physiology to prepare for action… big action!

Knowing what you know now! What are some key phrases you can say to yourself to prepare you for what lies ahead in your life? What are the things you are focusing on to move you powerfully forward in the future? How do you move your body to raise your energy levels and trigger positive emotions and prepare yourself to overcome any obstacles that come your way?

Knowing what you know now! What rituals do you set up when you get up in the morning? How do you prepare for your next important meeting? And perhaps most importantly, when you come home after a long day at the office, what rituals do you do to prepare for the most important time of your day, walking in the front door and spending an evening with your family?

Hat tip to Tony Robbins for turning a complex topic into an easy to understand framework.
