With this equation in mind, it becomes clear that no matter how many channels a story may contain, it’s important to treat each one like a tender, all-encompassing baby. Connecting the cheapest desk equivalent and 50 compressors to each channel, running those budget effects units, and then running the whole mix through a battered old “mixergut” doesn’t add class and quality. However, this formula worked for years in the underground dance scene, where the content and energy of the music was more important than sounding like a shiny chart topper.

Some would argue that this is much less the case… but as the saying goes, never judge a book by its cover. Another cliché states that “the proof is in the pudding.” And if your pudding is climbing the charts or hitting dance floors nationwide and the DJs are raving about it, it’s safe to say your mission has been accomplished. How you achieve results is up to you. With ever-growing families of softsynths, VST plugins, sequencers, DSP cards, etc., your chances of owning a high-end production studio without spending 80,000 are much better than 15 years ago.

Hardware still has a very strong and important place when it comes to music production and recording. With an estimated 250,000 mixing desks, it’s safe to assume they help the tracks sound like they were made in a top London studio. It’s not a hardware versus software argument like many people like it to be, but rather an exploration of both worlds and finding the one that best suits your needs. If you’re a student and DJ looking to bang out dirty electro, coughing up tens of thousands of pounds of hardware to cram into your living quarters is probably not the best way to go. A much more reasonable solution would be the software way.

With a modern full software studio, the production quality is comparable to that of a hardware studio with up to 100,000 sets. This may sound absurd, but think about it. You have 27 audio tracks. Each one requires your precision to get the best compressor unit. About great value. If only 15 channels require such treatment, then…do the math. Add to that top quality EQ, limiting, reverbs, delays, phasers, flanning, stereo processing, synths…the list goes on. Buy one top-of-the-line software processor and it’s instantly available on every channel. Get yourself a fat softsynth and use it in the same way as many times as you like. It’s not a cheap hobby in terms of hardware, so for those of you who don’t have notepads hidden under your bed, read on. This guide is for anyone who wants to create top quality tracks on their computer without compromise. A cheap recording studio does not mean cheap sound quality! Cheap music software doesn’t mean limited production techniques.

The software’s sound processing algorithms are constantly being improved. Since certain companies produce DSP cards and VST and DirectX plugins that are very close to their expensive hardware counterparts, this is a serious consideration for most.

So if you’re sitting there looking at that little computer that was sitting pretty unassumingly on your desk, don’t judge.
