Pregnancy Due Date Calculations – How Many Babies Arrive on Time?

The usual gestation period is 40 weeks. Midwives and doctors count the term of pregnancy as 280 days from the first day of the last menstrual period. This means that by the time most women are notified of their baby’s birth (starting from the day they missed their period), they are already considered 4 weeks pregnant.

But how many children arrive on time? The EDD (Estimated Due Date) given to pregnant women is classified as a guide because the actual duration of pregnancy can vary due to different ovulation patterns in people and the fact that the date of conception is rarely known precisely.

We polled over 300 members to find out how accurate their due date was.

Bang at the right time

General statistics say that only 5% of babies are born with their EDD, but our members had much more success. Over 14% stated that their child was born on their due date. Most mothers felt a sense of accomplishment in this:

“Zoe arrived on her due date: I was a very proud mummy.”

“Kiera also arrived on her due date, who says girls are always late!”

Early babies

Early labor can be a concern for many mothers-to-be, but a pregnancy is considered full-term at 37 weeks. Most babies are born two weeks to either side of their due date, so if your baby is a little early, there’s usually nothing to worry about.

Our survey showed that 34% of our responding members were born before EDD. Most of them stayed within the normal 2 week period, but there were a few exceptions for very early babies who are now doing well:

“These 2 were 10 weeks early” – mothers of multiples report the percentage of their babies born early.

“2nd was 14 weeks early” – what our mothers told us about their healthy, bouncy premature babies.

Late arrivals

Almost 51% of our respondents reported that their babies were born later than their EDD. Although it can be frustrating to have to wait a little longer, it’s perfectly normal for babies to be born later. Your doctor and midwife will monitor you and if you continue to be late in your pregnancy without your baby showing any signs of movement, they may decide to induce you.

“My pregnancy lasted exactly 42 weeks and ended in a c-section because he wouldn’t come out…he was too comfortable!!”

While your pregnancy due date is a good guide to when to expect a new arrival, it’s clear that babies will come when they’re ready! If you want to know when your baby is due, try our pregnancy due date calculator.
