Do You Take Your Business Personally?

Do you take your business personally? That’s a fair question. Most people say, “This is business, don’t take it personally.” But really, is it possible? I do not belive. I think business is personal. Let’s face it, we’re human. We are people with lives who love and care for others. As humans, we are compassionate, thoughtful, and have feelings. So how can we turn feelings out of business? We can not. However, we can take the negativity out of it.

What do I mean by removing negativity? Many business owners take “no” personally. Let’s take a look at a service-based business like a trainer, personal trainer, massage therapist, or even a virtual assistant. In these companies, it is customary to make offers to potential customers so that they come to benefit from our services. However, when we hear “no,” we may interpret it as potential clients saying “no” to us personally, when in fact it’s saying “no” to the services we provide.

I call this type of behavior victim behavior. This means that when we are told “no” we feel rejected and then go down the “I’m not good enough” path…which never leads to anything positive. That’s what I mean when I say take the negativity out of it. YOU are good enough. When you go into victim mode, you’re drained of energy, you have less drive to get things done, and you certainly don’t want to make another offer because—God forbid—no matter what that person says, you just won. can’t handle it.

Yes, we take our businesses personally. I’ve been there. I have felt down and out when someone has told me no. I’ve felt that maybe I’m not good at it and who would want to work with me anyway. It wasn’t until I realized I was a victim and took “no” personally. What they said no to is actually themselves. They say no to their growth, their potential and their happiness.

Here’s a secret: usually when someone you like says no, it’s because they don’t feel good enough. They may feel like they’re not getting the great results you’re telling them about. They may feel like it’s too hard (another negative and definitely an excuse) and they can’t live up to your expectations…or even their own.

Just so you know; A lot of people use money as an excuse, and sometimes it’s a really good reason. However, once they’ve sought you out and asked to talk to you, it’s probably time for them to move on and they may be fearful and in a victim mentality.

So, here are a few “rules” to keep in mind so that you don’t take “no” personally in your business.

Rule #1: You are good enough, right here and now!

Rule #2: You have everything you need to be powerful in any situation.

Rule #3: You Are Not Your Business – When someone says no, it’s not a personal no.

Rule #4: Make a list of things you’ve excelled at, and if you personally say no, take them out and read them.

Rule #5: Remember Rule #1

Everyone feels that they may not live up to expectations and therefore they may not even try. When you hear “no,” try to also remember that it’s no now, but not forever. I know I’m not the only one who has had a potential client say no and then at some point come to me and say yes. People often need to think things through and process them. Yes, sometimes they have to feel the pain of struggle a little longer before they can say yes to themselves…remember who they end up saying yes to.

A wise mentor once told me, “You take yourself with you everywhere, so why not make the best of yourself at every turn, letting go of the opportunity to take things personally, because that will never serve you well.”
