Toddler Formula Vs Cows Milk
I recently did some in-depth research on what milk is best for babies, as many mothers seem to be concerned about whether their babies should be drinking cow’s milk, low-fat milk or infant formula after their first birthday.
The World Health Organization recommends exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months and breastfeeding until at least 2 years of age. So I guess if you are breastfeeding your toddler then the issue of cow’s milk in formula verses not relevant to you, it’s one less thing to worry about, YAY!
Australian infant formula manufacturers and importers have entered into a voluntary agreement that adheres to the principles of the World Health Organization’s International Code of Marketing of Breast-milk Substitutes. Essentially, the Code and the Agreement prevent the promotion of infant formula for babies aged 12 months and under in Australia. The reason for this agreement and its advertising restrictions is to protect breastfeeding.
However, these restrictions do not apply to infants and formula milk. Thus, by labeling infant formula as “golden” or “formula,” marketing companies can promote infant formula by simply making the association. This may be one of the reasons why infant formula is so heavily advertised.
Sydney Morning Herald Medical Reporter Bellinda Kontominas (06/09/07) quotes Sydney pediatrician Dr Patricia McVeagh as saying: “Unfortunately, advertising affects the vulnerability of parents…Nutritionally healthy children do not need toddler milk. , and it is much better to have 600 milliliters cow’s milk or a cow’s milk product, such as cheese or yogurt.
While many nutritionists will tell you that formula is the equivalent of junk food, I honestly think it has its place. It can supplement the diet of picky eaters and children who may be deficient in iron and calcium due to their limited diet. And while there are other ways to deal with fussiness, there are times when real life takes over and the demands of work can make infant formula convenient for other children, partners, etc.
During my research, I was surprised to discover that the National Dietary Guidelines for Children and Adolescents recommended that all Australian children over the age of 2 should consume reduced-fat milk. That’s because the saturated fat in whole milk builds up in the arteries over time, increasing the risk of heart disease, and reduced-fat milk varieties generally contain more calcium than full-fat milk.
On the other hand, infants between 12 and 24 months of age need whole milk, and while soy milk should not be offered to infants under 12 months of age, lactose-intolerant infants over 2 years of age can be offered soy milk that contains added calcium.
So at the end of the day, keeping things simple is usually the best way to go. Cow’s milk is good for babies, it contains everything they need to grow healthy and strong. It’s cheaper than formula, easily available when you’re out and about, goes great with cereal, and it’s something you don’t have to wean your toddler off of as they get older. So why complicate things with toddler formula when you don’t have to?
