Detoxify your Thighs
During the Christmas holidays in Colorado, my family and I decided to go to the local hot springs. It was just what we needed to warm up from the cold outside all day cross-country skiing. There were people of all shapes and sizes. Almost every woman and teenage girl I noticed developed cellulite on her thighs. I started paying attention to who had more cellulite and who had less. No woman was immune to its influence. There were even female athletes who had cellulite on their thighs with washboard stomachs. I found it very disturbing that so few women did not have cellulite. What is it about our culture that encourages this ugly bloat, and what can we do to prevent it? Is exercise the key or is it something more?
What is cellulite and how to get rid of it? After researching how to get rid of these deposits naturally, I discovered that women in Europe have been going to health spas and using creams to get rid of cellulite or “unsightly fat deposits” for at least twenty years. American doctors see this type of fat as a problem, but do not treat it as a “connective tissue disease” as the European medical community does.
Cellulite is a gel-like substance made up of fat, toxic waste and water trapped between fibrous tissue just below the surface of the skin. Cellulite is primarily a problem for women due to the higher percentage of fatty tissue and the greater elasticity of the skin. The subcutaneous layer of fat jumps between this fibrous tissue, causing a “fat bulge” in the subcutaneous layer. A healthy woman without cellulite would have fat in the skin layer. This problem occurs when the blood vessels deteriorate and deprive the skin of essential nutrients. Second, fats stick together and bind to proteins. Water chokes cells due to toxicity in adipose tissue. Water dilutes toxic residues and creates a gel-like substance that creates an orange peel appearance on the skin. Cellulite can be said to be an inflammatory process due to:
1. Decreased blood circulation in the area
2. Loss of capillary networks
3. Excess liquid hidden
4. Fat deposition is usually hormonally mediated
5. Vascular changes within the dermis.
6. Toxic waste materials stored in adipose tissue in less vascular areas of the body.
7 Steps to Detoxify Your Thighs
Some doctors say that cellulite is caused by damaged, dehydrated skin. I believe that this is one of the causes of cellulite, but this is not the whole truth. The first step to reducing cellulite is to repair damaged skin cells and connective tissue. We can do this by following these seven important steps.
1. The first step to change is using antioxidants to reverse free radical damage and promote microcirculation. Vitamin C and vitamin A are the most important antioxidants for the skin. Without vitamin C, you cannot grow collagen. Vitamin A is one of the most important nutrients for keeping the skin healthy and firm.
2. Another key is to increase circulation throughout the body. Gingko biloba increases microcirculation and thereby rids the body of accumulated toxins. Dry brushing is an important addition to our detox regimen. Five minutes of dry brushing every day is equivalent to half an hour of exercise. Use a dry vegetable-bristled brush in circular motions from the toes to the heart. It acts as a manual lymph pump to flush out toxins and maintain healthy circulation. Use circulating essential oils such as rosemary and birch to kick-start fat storage. Put 20 drops in every 4 oz. carrier oil such as sesame or almond oil and rub daily on the buttocks, thighs and hips.
3. Eliminate a lot of mucus-producing foods and most dairy products, especially if they are not organic. The lymphatic system has a direct effect on the appearance and condition of your skin. When the lymph becomes clogged with mucus-forming food, the toxins cannot be carried away, and many of these waste products lie and remain in the skin. Cellulite occurs when stagnant lymph filled with toxins gets stuck directly in the fat under the skin. Non-organic dairy products contain large amounts of synthetic hormones that disrupt our sensitive hormonal systems.
4. Regulate your hormones with specific nutrient rich oils. A high amount of estrogen in the body determines the deposition of fat, especially in the hips, buttocks and thighs. Remember that estrogen builds up the body, like during pregnancy. It also promotes excess water retention in the tissues. When the lymphatic system is sluggish, toxins get trapped in thigh storage boxes. Essential fatty acids also moisturize the skin by strengthening cell walls. Oils keep the skin well hydrated. This is important because essential fatty acids regulate the body’s hormones. When hormones are balanced, cells hydrate properly. It is also easier to maintain a healthy weight. One simple way to do this is to alternate between organic flaxseed oil and evening primrose oil with the waxing and waning of the moon. It naturally regulates estrogen and progesterone in the body. Other oils should be used after menopause. If your hormones are really out of balance, I recommend weekly acupuncture and special formulas to help. A hormonally balanced woman is usually a healthy woman.
5. Open the elimination pathway by stimulating liver, kidney and colon detoxification. If the vacuum cleaner is filled with toxic debris, it will not work. We need to clean up our system to make it work more efficiently. When we are constipated, our elimination system is “backed up.” Other bodies then have to do “double duty”. Sometimes, when this happens, too many toxins flood the system at once and the liver has to store away that waste for later in the day. It does this by storing waste products in the fat lobe. The liver then sends it away from the main organs to areas of the body where circulation is poor. These toxins stay in this place, protected from important body functions. A French herbalist named Maurice Messegue did extensive research on cellulite control with women all over Europe. It was only when these women stopped eating foods containing pesticides and chemicals (mostly processed foods) that they were able to reduce the amount of cellulite on their bodies. By stimulating the liver with milk thistle, dandelion, or specific individual detoxification formulas that target the liver, kidneys, and lymphatic system, we can help them function more efficiently. At my clinic in Austin, Texas, I use individualized formulas and nutrients for each patient to break down waste material trapped in the cells. Common ways to do this are to squeeze half a lemon in water three times a day to break up mucus and stimulate the liver. Next, I recommend taking organic raw apple cider vinegar (1 tablespoon in 8 ounces of water) before meals to stimulate digestion and alkalize the body.
6. Stimulate your metabolism. Drinking three cups of green tea a day is one of the best ways to do this. Not only does it boost your metabolism, it’s high in antioxidants, but it’s also capable of emulsifying fat! Another ingredient to improve our metabolism is using cayenne in lemon juice every day. Cayenne stimulates our digestion and improves circulation. Do not use cayenne if you have heat symptoms such as hot flashes or constant thirst.
7. Take regular saunas and hot baths. The most important secret to detoxifying cellulite is heating and breaking down fat deposits. Warming up your body stimulates the elimination of toxins and increases your metabolism and circulation. After taking a hot bath, you need to squeeze and twist your thighs and buttocks with your thumb and first two fingers. Do this gently but firmly. By doing this, you break down the fat and distribute it into the bloodstream. Then make strong movements towards the heart to move the blood and lymph. You can use a dry brush with vegetable bristles for this part. If you can’t get a sauna, hot baths are wonderful. Add essential oils such as juniper, grapefruit and rosemary to stimulate the liver and remove toxins. Other additions may include Epsom salt and baking soda. Use two cups of Epsom salt and one cup of baking soda in your bath. Epsom salt draws toxins out of the body, while baking soda alkalizes the system. Soak for twenty minutes until you sweat. When you get out of the bath, massage your stomach, buttocks and thighs, then rest. Do this at least three times a week.
In conclusion, thigh detox is not a simple quick fix pill. Most women agree that staying healthy needs to be part of a lifestyle change. A diet rich in grains, vegetables and fruits, with small amounts of meat, fish and legumes, keeps us energetic, strong and lean. Daily walking and yoga keep our body supple and strong in addition to the above steps. By incorporating all of these factors into your daily routine, you will have amazing success in reducing those unwanted bulges. Our body just needs the right nutrients, proper nutrition and proper detoxification.
