Yoga and Ayurveda – Sisters for Life

I’m sure most of you reading this take a yoga class once or twice a week or know someone who does. It’s the new fad, there’s a yoga studio on every corner. But did you know that yoga has a sister called Ayurveda. Not as dynamic and in-your-face as yoga, Ayurveda, the quieter, more reserved sister has been waiting for her turn in the limelight, and now it’s time.

Ayurveda and yoga are important parts of an ancient Indian system called the Vedas. Ayur or ayus is Sanskrit for “life” and Veda is knowledge or science. Literally “Science of Life”, Ayurveda is now emerging as one of the most important preventive forms of holistic medicine in today’s modern world. Ayurveda, like yoga, is about balance. It offers a unique healing system that explains the true health and proper alignment of the mind, body, senses, and spirit. Ayurvedic practitioners offer lifestyle adjustments that include diet, herbal formulas, color and gemstone therapy, massage, yoga, and meditation. They prescribe specific asanas or postures that help balance the energies of the body and mind. Our environment, our relationships, the food we eat, our work, the climate we live in, our faith and how we function in our little universe are very important because it determines our state of physical, mental and spiritual happiness and fulfillment. .

Energy and vibration are the basis of Ayurveda. The universe consists of pulsating energies, cosmic elements that together form the entire material creation. Everything around us, including ourselves, is made up of these elements; earth, water, fire, air and ether, which are constantly changing and transforming. Ayurveda classifies these five elements into three doshas or metabolic types.

Vata is a combination of ether and air and they share the same characteristics: dry, volatile and irregular. When fire and water combine, it is called Pitta, its main characteristics are hot, quick and decisive. Kapha is a combination of earth and water: strong, slow and methodical. These three doshas are present in every living cell. They affect us not only on a physical level, but also on a subtle mental and emotional level as harmony, energy and inertia. They affect everything we are and do. The choices we make and have made since birth. In fact, they make us who we are, the unique individuals we are.

Each of us has a dosha that is more dominant or stronger than the other two, a secondary one, and a third that is much less prominent. This combination of three doshas is determined when we are in the womb.

Four main reasons are responsible for a person’s metabolic type:

1. Metabolic type of fathers.

2. Maternal metabolic type.

3. State of the uterus.

4. Food and drink taken by the mother before and during pregnancy.

Our metabolic type should stay the same, but of course it doesn’t. Without knowing our type, we unwittingly create disharmony by eating the wrong things, doing the wrong exercises, even living in the wrong environment.

Nine types of combinations can manifest in Ayurveda:

1. Look

2. Pitta

3. Kapha

4. Vata-Pitta

5. Pitta-Kapha

6. Vata-Kapha

7. Pitta-Vata

8. Kapha-Pitta

9. Kapha-Vata

Famous people and their metabolism:

Vata-Pitta – Gwyneth Paltrow, Celine Dion

Pitta-Kapha – Drew Barrymore, Princess Diana, Nick Hucknall

Kapha-Pitta – Oprah Winfrey, Michael Moore

Pitta-Vata – Prince Harry, Tom Cruise

Vata-Kapha – Bono, Lulu

TYPE OF SALES TAX

Vata manifests itself as a light, slender body, a very tall or very short body. Muscle tissue is not strong and veins often extend through the skin, which in turn is dry and thin, as is the hair. Hands and feet tend to get cold and intolerance to cold food, weather, etc. Digestion is not in order and the appetite is not strong, so nutrients are not absorbed properly and constipation is often a problem. Nails and teeth may be irregular and protruding. Joints are often unstable and joints may crack. The voice is hoarse and dry. Vata, when aggravated, often causes insomnia and confusion. Vata is mobile and creates a need for constant change, vigorous exercise and talkativeness. Vata creates a quick, alert and creative mind. The speed of Vata is manifested in movement from one place to another, frequent exchange of things and friends. It creates subtle feelings of insecurity, fear, loneliness and worry. Dreams can often be scary. Memory is not long-term, but the ability to multitask is good.
