How to Calculate the Carbon Footprint of Trucking Shipments

I get a lot of inquiries about calculating the carbon footprint of trucking. The calculation of the problem is quite simple. However, there is one variable that creates a problem. Fuel consumption. Fuel consumption is not constant. It depends on many factors such as: the age of the truck, the general maintenance of the truck, the aerodynamic factor of the truck, whether it was going uphill or downhill, whether it was a windy day, etc., etc. estimated: 6 miles per gallon is a good estimate of what the truck will use on average. Example #1: FULL TRUCK LOAD

Full truck load

Fuel economy: 6 miles per gallon

Mileage: 1000

Carbon per US gallon of diesel fuel: 2.77 KG

= 1000 miles / 6 mpg x 2.77 kg per gallon

(please ignore the mix up of imperial and metric. The transportation industry is still in imperial while the rest of us are in metric!)

= 461.68 KG is the carbon footprint of this shipment.

If you are looking for the formula = 0.46 kg per mile driven (based on a 44,000 lb truck load).

Example #2 LTL:

LTL

Full truck = 44,000 lbs

Fuel consumption = 6 mpg

Miles = 1000

Shipment = 10,000 lbs

Carbon per US gallon of diesel fuel = 2.77 KG

We know that the carbon footprint of this carload is 461.68kg from the previous calculation and the full truck carries 44,000lbs. So, 461.68 / 44,000 = 0.0105 per pound. For this LTL shipment, multiply by 10,000 lbs = 104.93 KG of carbon.

If you are looking for the formula = 0.0105 kg lbs/1000 miles = 0.00001 kg lbs/mile

=0.00001x lbs x MILES

Note. Because LTL density can vary, you’ll need to modify the formula based on how much of your product will fit in the truck. For example: If you shipped pillows and an entire carload of pillows would only weigh 10,000 pounds. You should adjust the calculation I just did above accordingly.
