The Importance of Setting Goals

There is no doubt that goal setting is essential to achievement. Obviously, you can’t get to your destination if you don’t even know where you’re going!

We all have our dreams and we all think from time to time:

“I’d really like to…”

“I’d really like to be…”

“I would really like to…”

And so on………

But how many of us go further? How to turn your dreams into reality?

Well, the most effective way is to set goals. Goal setting is used by many, in fact probably most, of life’s highest achievers.

Achieving your goals is not just a great way to move your life forward, it has many benefits:

  • You will see your confidence increase
  • Your happiness will increase
  • Your relationships will improve
  • Your stress will decrease
  • Your health will improve

It’s all because you’re in control of your life, not letting life control you!

Your first steps in goal setting

First, find a quiet place to sit where you won’t be disturbed.

Write down what you want to achieve by category.

Your categories may include any or all of the following.

  • Professional
  • Financial
  • Educational
  • Relationships
  • Family
  • Free time
  • Health and fitness
  • Contribution (Voluntary/Charity)

Tip!

If you’ve never set goals before, I’d recommend starting with one or two. The worst thing you can do is push yourself too hard, as this will result in you giving up before you’ve barely even started.

If you’re feeling unsure about the whole process, set some small goals that you can achieve fairly easily while you get into the habit of writing down something you want to achieve and achieving it. Then you can start setting bigger goals and eventually set goals at different levels and in more areas of life.

Smart goals

There is a formula for achieving goals that indicates whether you want to achieve one or more goals, and this is the SMART goal formula:

S – Specific

M – Measurable

A – Achievable

R – Realistic

T – limited in time

An example of a SMART goal would be:

“I want to lose 14 pounds by 12/21/10.”

S – It is specific in that you want to lose weight

M – Measurable since you have published 14 lbs

A and R – It’s achievable and realistic because you haven’t said you want to lose 14 pounds by the end of the week, you’ve given yourself three months to get there.

T – It is time bound because you have set yourself a specific date by which it will be achieved.

Long-term goals

When you have long-term goals, you can make them SMARTER goals.

The E is – Evaluate

The R is – reassess

This means that longer-term goals need to be more flexible. Circumstances may change and this may mean you need to go back and adjust your goals. For example, you may have decided that you want to add an extension to your house this year, but after achieving that goal you are offered a job promotion and as a result you have to move. Obviously, you don’t need to extend the house you currently live in.

Reassessing your goals is NOT an excuse to move the goalposts because you are doing little or nothing to achieve them; this should only be done if you really need to customize them for a good reason. Remember that if you cheat with your goals, you are only cheating yourself!

On the plus side, the revenue goal you set for yourself is met early, so you can adjust your goal upward.

Break them down

Very big goals like “I want my own business” can be very scary and, to put it in those words, are also very vague because you don’t have a plan on how to actually achieve them.

Don’t get discouraged though, you can achieve big goals, you just have to break down into smaller ones.

You need to do a really thorough brainstorming on paper of all the things you need to do to make it happen using the SMART formula above.

Remember the old saying, “How do you eat an elephant? One piece at a time.”

Goals should actually be broken down directly into your daily to-do list. It’s the perfect way to keep yourself on track.

Finally

Don’t forget to congratulate yourself for each goal you achieve, because each time you are one very important step closer to your dreams!

Your path to success is guaranteed by setting goals and achieving them.
