I just noticed Dr. Oz this month had a special article O magazine about this very topic. I wanted to create my own version of what a healthy fridge should consist of, using my own fridge as an example. In this article, I’ll help you decide what to keep, clean, or remove from your refrigerator. What are the best and not-so-good ingredients hiding in your Frigidaire?

So here’s how to keep your fridge COOL and not scary. Let’s take a look at what you should keep. Consider the basics of your healthy fridge:

1) Nuts and seeds: They are a must in every healthy fridge and diet. Store them in a cool refrigerator to maintain optimal freshness preserve delicate natural fats characteristic of these nutritious snacks. This list includes almonds, chia seeds, hemp seeds, and pine nuts.

2) Vegetables: Fill your fridge with the freshest vegetables available. Stock up on crispy crunchy delight from the garden. My fridge has a pull-out drawer filled with romaine lettuce (three bunches), lemons, limes, onions (1/2 serving), green onions, and cucumbers. In my larger pullout, I have all the rest – kale, chard, eggplant, carrots, cauliflower, red cabbage, turnips, etc.

3) Fruits: As I’ve said before, I have another fridge in the garage where the overflow goes – it’s filled with grapefruit, oranges, apples and cauliflower, or sometimes I buy a big bag of baby spinach and put that in there too.

4) Probiotics: Although most probiotics are not food, they do require refrigeration retain their potency. More and more companies are starting to produce non-frozen versions that give you more flexibility when traveling.

5) Milk products: It is best to store butter and cheese in special sections of the refrigerator, especially cheese. Butter, like eggs, has a much longer shelf life than cheese. If you need a fast protein food choose low-fat cheeses. Don’t be afraid to use butter – just use it sparingly.

6) Eggs: Eggs need to be kept cool to maintain quality. Eggs have excellent shelf life and they’re always good to have on hand for a quick protein meal or a special recipe.

7) Coconut milk and coconut butter: Here again, you want to keep the coconut products cool to maintain freshness. The coconut has gained a well-deserved reputation as a a healthy alternative to dairy products.

Here’s what to throw:

1) Leftovers: If they are more than 3 days old, it is better to throw them away. The longer you store prepared/cooked foods, the more they break down and reduce their nutritional value. So avoid cooking too much at once. It takes practice, but it’s best to eat your food as fresh as possible.

2) Salad Dressing: Most sauces on the market are heavily sweetened or contain less than pure ingredients. It is best to hold on olive oil and either apple cider vinegar or balsamic vinegar as a suitable and healthier salad dressing option. Also, a number of vinegar and oil gourmet shops are popping up everywhere. They offer great varieties like Blackberry or Persian Lime Vinegar. Or how about someone with hazelnut oil?

3) Mayo: Unless it’s unhydrogenated, it’s best to avoid it. Hydrogenation is a processing method that damages fragile oils, rendering them toxic when consumed. It is best to make your own version of mayonnaise or try using plain yogurt instead. It might taste a little sour, but it’s better for you.

4) Sauces: Avoid most prepared sauces. They are usually full of artificial ingredients and add unnecessary calories to your meals. Consider using fresh herbs such as dill, mint, basil or rosemary instead. Or use warming spices like curry, cumin, or cayenne. Or, for example, cooling spices like oregano or Herbs du Provence.

5) Ketchup: This flavoring is nothing but sugar and artificial ingredients. You can’t really even claim the tomato’s redeeming veggie/fruit contribution because it’s just tomato flavoring, nothing more. Try this instead using chili powder or sriracha sauce instead, but be careful, these two pack more punch than ketchup.
