New Book Advocates Domino Formula to Replace Dieting

Registered dietitian and certified life coach Karie Cassell offers readers a new perspective on weight loss in her new book, The Domino Diet: How to Heal From the Inside Out. She advocates a more conscious perspective on weight loss and overall health that is less focused on calories and diet and more focused on the big picture of self-healing on multiple levels. Instead of succumbing to the consequences of yo-yo dieting, where you lose a few pounds, gain it back, and try again, Cassell recommends using his Domino Diet formula to help you adjust multiple areas of your life. Once all these areas are taken care of, they fall into place like a domino effect.

As Karie explains, dieting is often ineffective in that when we lose weight, the subconscious mind can try to regain it, leading to the inevitable plateaus and low success of yo-yo dieting. However, if we trade yo-yos for dominoes, we will be much more successful. We begin healing from the inside out, releasing conditions and diagnoses to enjoy improved health. As Karie reminds us, we can regenerate at optimal cellular levels in as little as 120 days. The Domino Diet formula allows you to get rid of what ails you to create a newer, healthier you.

The Domino Diet is divided into six parts, each one related to a specific domino or area that needs to be adjusted so that we can achieve and maintain our body weight and stay healthy. These dominoes include our thoughts, feelings and hormones. Karie guides us through the exploration of all six dominoes, which, when lined up properly, lead to freedom—not only freedom from excess weight, but also from many ills that plague other areas of our lives.

The Domino Diet is much more than just a diet book. In fact, Karie is quick to point out the problem with most diets. As a dietitian, he knows that instead of a fixed calorie approach, it makes more sense to recommend a range of caloric intake that depends on active and inactive days. After all, as he points out, we don’t live in a fixed world. In addition, we need to reinterpret what the bathroom scale tells us. In general, as Karie argues, restrictive diets are counterproductive to true healing, and “It’s time to ditch your diet mindset and start thinking healing.”

One of the main ways to heal is to look at why we eat. If we’re not eating because we’re hungry, chances are we’re eating emotionally. We need to examine the failures, guilt, chaos, and stuck feelings that make up our emotional eating patterns. We also need to change the way we view our bodies. Research shows that 80 percent of women and almost as many men are not satisfied with their bodies. Karie wants us to change our relationship with our bodies by changing our thoughts. Throughout the book, she offers positive affirmations that we can use to appreciate all that our bodies do for us while clearing our minds of where it all begins.

Some of the ways we can lose weight that Karie illustrates really surprised me. One example is his discussion of the importance of breathing. He claims that “with a combination of deep breathing (more O2 in and out) and proper sleep, weight loss can literally happen in your dreams.” He also recommends looking at how and where we eat. Many of us eat while watching the news, which is usually bad news versus “good nibbles.” This results in a stressful eating environment, and stress increases weight gain. With action steps that guide you through the book with examples like “The Power of Pausing Before Eating,” you can “rest and digest” and enjoy food again.

We also need to consider the psychological reasons behind our food choices. We live in a society of affluence, but just a generation or two ago it wasn’t like that. Our grandparents survived the Great Depression and World War II food rationing. They didn’t always have enough food and this led them to easily succumb to marketing strategies that taught them to buy two for one, basically hoard food and pass that behavior on to us. We have to adapt to modern times, letting go of the belief that we have to eat everything on the plate or stock up on food when it’s on sale, because later it might not be enough. Perhaps my favorite point in the entire book is when Karie said we need to stop acting like every meal is the “last supper.” It’s time to get rid of the scarcity mindset and embrace abundance, guilt-free!

Another issue I never considered is the effect of menopause and “manopause” on our eating habits. Karie suggests that we retrain ourselves to not think of this period as a midlife crisis, but rather a midlife awakening. He says it would be abnormal for there not to be an awakening in midlife, so we need to celebrate this time, not just eat our way through it.

Other factors that affect our weight include holding onto anger. As Karie says, “Forgiveness is like vegetables—like it or not, it’s good for you.” In addition, we may be afraid of what the desired weight is – in short, we are afraid of success. We create scary scenarios, like thinking we’ll never have fun again if we commit to a health program, and if we lose weight, we’ll have to spend a bunch of money we don’t have on new clothes. Karie clarifies that it’s still fun; we just need a little moderation: “It’s not all or nothing. It’s not Christmas. It means Christmas is a month long, camping is for a season, and Fridays are for life.”

These are just a few topics from The Domino Diet. Karie writes in a down-to-earth, honest and fun style full of insight, along with reflections, affirmations and great quotes to motivate you to make the changes you need to experience the full joy of feeling mentally and physically healthy. . I hope you read this book and get your dominoes lined up to create the results you love.
