16 Essential Oils For Your Dog
Essential oils can produce the desired result faster than herbs. A drop of peppermint oil equals 26 cups of peppermint tea. Essential oils are versatile, whereas many drugs usually have only one medicinal property plus negative side effects.
Some health professionals do not recommend applying essential oils to their paws. Pets lick their feet and this can cause potential irritation as saliva is similar to water. Essential oils penetrate the skin quickly. Compounds such as fertilizer, antifreeze, and other toxic substances can be absorbed faster when essential oils are applied to their paws.
I have taken advice from Dr. Nancy Brandt, DVM and applied the knowledge to my own dog breeding. She is a holistic veterinarian based in Las Vegas, NV and uses Young Living essential oils in her practice. Most essential oils should be diluted with a carrier or carrier oil before applying to your pet. 1 drop of essential oil per 10 drops of base/carrier oil is recommended for dogs and 1 drop of essential oil per 25 drops of base/carrier oil is recommended for cats, rabbits and ferrets. You can listen to Dr. Brandt’s 01/29/2009 online lecture on 16 Young Living Essential Oils Every Pet Owner Should Have On Hand.
In my opinion, the best base or carrier oil is organic cold-pressed olive oil, grapeseed oil, or fractionated coconut oil. Avoid nut oils if your pet is allergic to nuts. I recommend using Young Living’s V-6 Advanced Vegetable Oil Complex as a base/carrier oil. The ingredients of V-6 are Fractionated Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil, Sesamum Indicum (Sesame) Seed Oil, Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Seed Oil, Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis (Sweet Almond) Oil, Triticum Vulgare (Wheat) Germ Oil, Heluus Hum Annil. (sunflower) seed oil and Olea Europaea (olive oil) fruit oil. Cold pressed olive oil and grape seed oil are other options to use as a base/carrier oil.
Oil and water do not mix; water will irritate the oil on your pet’s skin. If your pet is sensitive to any essential oil, dilute the oil with a base/carrier oil or add more base/carrier oil to the spot where the essential oil is applied. If any essential oil gets in your pet’s eyes, rinse with a carrier/carrier oil, never with water.
I chose essential oils made by Young Living. They are of therapeutic quality and processed correctly. They are organic and do not contain toxic substances such as pesticides. Not all essential oils can be ingested. Young Living essential oils are one of the few essential oils that can be safely taken internally. There are 42 types of frankincense, but Young Living chooses the 2 types that have the most therapeutic benefits, not the cheapest to make and process. Oils are processed at low heat by steam distillation or cold pressing. This makes more natural properties available. Some essential oil brands process their products with higher heat and therefore their essential oils do not have all the properties and may contain toxic substances. They cost less and are not as effective.
Balsam fir (Idaho) essential oil is anti-inflammatory, anticoagulant (stops blood clotting) and acts like cortisone. It is used for respiratory problems and pain. If you have breathing problems, rub your chest. For pain problems, rub on the source. I diffuse it in my kennel when I see or hear signs of a runny nose or cough. You can combine 2-3 essential oils and diffuse for desired results.
Eucalyptus Radiata can be used as a smelling salt and helps to open the lungs for upper respiratory infections. Its medicinal properties are antibacterial, antiviral, expectorant and anti-inflammatory. As a smelling salt, the bottle is briefly held under the nose. For breathing problems, rub the chest. I use eucalyptus on my dogs cloth collars and it works like an insect repellent. I spray eucalyptus on my main ball cap while fishing and the bugs leave me alone.
Frankincense can cross the blood-brain barrier and help bring oxygen to the brain. Frankincense is used for infections and tumors, it dissolves lumps and bumps. Frankincense is antibacterial, antiviral, expectorant and anti-inflammatory. It can be used topically, diffused or simply inhaled. I have put frankincense on my pet’s lumps and the lumps are reducing in size quickly.
Helichysum is great for bruises or bleeding. I use it when the dewclaws are removed or the tail is docked. This speeds up the healing process. This essential oil is not diluted, but rubbed directly onto the bare abdomen, making sure to avoid the genitals. Apply 1 drop per 1 inch of empty stomach from the center of the pet’s abdomen up. Medicinal properties of Helichrysum are anticoagulant, anesthetic, spasmolytic, antiviral, liver detoxifier; chelates chemicals and toxins and regenerates nerves. If you suspect rat poison, choose Helichysum. This will help control internal bleeding when you travel to your vet.
Lavender is a versatile essential oil and can be used for almost anything. This essential oil is applied neat (not diluted). Lavender is great for treating burns, including sunburn. Lavender has a great calming effect. Here’s a recipe that can be misted into the air: add 2 drops to 1 oz. of evaporated distilled water, pour into a spray bottle, shake before each use. Its medicinal properties are antiseptic, anti-fungal, anti-tumor, anti-convulsant, vasodilator, relaxant, anti-inflammatory, lipid/cholesterol-lowering, and fights excess oil on the skin. I use lavender to remove tear stains when my puppies are teething. Apply only once a day, put one drop on your finger and rub it over the nose and under the eyes (avoid the eyes). I like to use it at night because lavender has calming properties.
Peppermint is great for treating diarrhea and vomiting. Be sure to dilute with a base/carrier oil formula. Medicinal properties of peppermint include anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor, anti-parasitic (worm), anti-bacterial, anti-viral, anti-fungal, gallbladder/gastrointestinal stimulant and pain reliever, and helps reduce appetite. I use peppermint diluted and rubbed on my gums or stomach to stop diarrhea.
Pine works for respiratory problems and works even better when mixed with eucalyptus. It’s a great combination to diffuse in the winter months and smells amazing. Or it can be rubbed on the chest between the front legs. The healing properties of pine are hormone-like, anti-diabetic, cortisone-like, antiseptic and lymphatic system stimulant.
Essential oil blends are a combination of several essential oils that have a wider spectrum of beneficial medicinal properties. Di-Gize helps relieve diarrhea and vomiting. It works better than mint. Apply the oil on your bare stomach and rub it in a clockwise motion according to the movement of your colon. Egyptian gold supports the immune system and is used for open wounds (dog/cat fight). It is worn on the chest and between the shoulder blades on the back. Joy helps the heart and circulation. Apply to breast and side of ribs. GLF should be used if your pet is exposed to a toxic substance such as a fertilizer or additive. Rub on the liver. The liver is located on the right side under the ribs. Melrose is great for chronic infections such as hard-to-heal abscesses (wounds). Panaway is for dog bites, bruises, cuts and scratches. Cleansing is used undiluted for insect bites. It cleans the air and kills the Parvo virus. It balances electrical energies. Use it as a diffuser on your pet’s bedding. Mix 1 drop to 1 ounce of steam distilled water in a spray bottle. Before use, shake and spray the room, bedding and toys anything your pet touches to disinfect. I recommend this to my clients when they are considering boarding their pet to keep their pet germ free. Thieves kills bacteria and can be used as a natural antibiotic. To keep your pet’s teeth clean, you should use a toothpick. This is a healthier option than taking your pet to the vet for teeth cleaning. Apply a drop to your finger and rub your pet’s upper gums once a week or daily if you notice problems. Thieves is not recommended for use in cats due to liver sensitivity. Valor is chiropractic in a bottle. It detoxifies the body by balancing the energy centers (chakras). Apply to spine. This is a great essential oil blend for pets that live an active lifestyle such as hunting or experimenting.
