My Fragrance Voyage – The Palazzo Las Vegas – A Review
It towers 642 feet above the famous Las Vegas Strip. Its 53 floors are home to 3,000 ultra-exquisite suites, some of the world’s most luxurious retail establishments and the finest restaurants. It also offers the best entertainment in the West. Even its name symbolizes ultimate luxury; its English translation is palace. I have to admit that this place almost gave me an orgasm. This $1.8 billion behemoth blew my mind in a good way. The place, building, resort and hotel I am describing is Palazzo Las Vegas, the Strip’s newest luxury hotel-casino. I felt the need to tour Vegas’ newest luxury destination. This is my olfactory journey at Palazzo Las Vegas.
I dressed my best in my store as usual. But this outfit was more casual; I wanted to relax during my tour. I wore Lee blue jeans, a Perry Ellis ribbed forest green turtleneck, a brown leather Italian cut jacket, and a pair of Stacy Adams shoes. Finally, I brought my favorite small purse, a Gucci wallet.
I jumped into my trusty truck and drove to the Palazzo. Parking was a breeze. In its multi-level underground public garage, I was greeted by a space a little unusual for the Strip. Most parking garages on the Strip are big monstrous things, usually hidden behind the Strip’s more glamorous facades. I thought the Sands Corporation, owner of the Venice and the Palazzo, chose a good location for the garage; it gives the Palazzo a more cosmopolitan feel.
I got out of my truck and walked into the glass enclosure. I stepped onto the escalator and was taken to the casino/lobby level. The Palazzo Casino was like most big casinos on the Strip: thousands of colorful and noisy slot and poker machines and lots of green-topped gaming tables. I decided to leave the casino and headed towards the grand lobby of the Palazzo. The appearance of the lobby was as I expected. It was elegant and very grand. In the middle of it I saw a beautiful fountain standing under a large glass dome. It was surrounded by gorgeous glass nude bullies, encouraging hotel patrons to live out their sinful dreams. It was a very beautiful centerpiece. Curious about the architectural influences of the Palazzo lobby and the rest of the hotel, I asked the concierge what country or culture influenced the hotel’s architecture. He explained that it is based on continental European buildings. However, Old World Italian design was the main architectural paradigm. Satisfied with his answer, I proceeded to the actual part of my fragrance journey, visiting The Shoppes at Palazzo.
The first store I visited was Fresh, high-end and niche perfumery. The store was not open to the public, but the store manager gave me permission to explore it. It was styled like most high-end perfumes, but still with a little twist – very bright, lots of glass, understated but very modern. The manager told me that Fresh was owned by the luxury conglomerate LVMH, which coincidentally owned Guerlain and Louis Vuitton. He mentioned that his company moved to the Palazzo because they were adding stores to many luxury destinations. In other words, Fresh was in high growth mode.
I asked her about the most popular scent among customers. He mentioned that Sake was the best seller. According to Osmoz, this fragrance is “sensual and delicate, inspired by Japanese beauty rituals. Blending unusual notes of the Asian plant langsati with white peach and Chinese osmanthus flowers.” According to the manager, other popular scents were Sugar lychee a fruity-floral fragrance for women and Hemp Santal an oriental-woody fragrance for men. I thanked the manager for taking the time to talk to me and continued my journey.
As I walked towards the next retail location, I passed Tony Burch, a fashion house known for creating fine fashion at affordable prices for women. I also noticed signs for future stores of these notable brands: Chloe, Diane Von Furstenberg, Fendi, Michael Kors, Montblanc, Ralph Lauren, Thomas Pink and Van Cleef & Arpels.
I finally reached my next destination. It was Bottega Veneta. The look of it was what I would expect from most fancy boutiques. It had many glass screens and was well lit. I also remembered its tan and tan tones. Its most beautiful and precious handbags were arranged on glass wall shelves. At the back of the boutique, clothes hang on racks. Very popular and less expensive items were placed on display shelves scattered throughout the store. I was greeted by a charming young woman. I asked him about the brand’s fragrances, but he told me that was not his area of expertise. I asked her about handbags. Her face lit up and she said that Bottega Veneta was well known for its handbags. The most popular bag designs were Cabat and Veneta. I thanked him for talking to me and went to my next retail location.
I later learned that Bottega Veneta does not produce fragrances for humans. It makes a home fragrance, which is what a scented candle is called Inreccio N. 1. It has cedar, eucalyptus, hay and leather.
The next store I visited was Coach. I wanted to smell the fashion house’s new and only women’s perfume, Coach by coach. As I entered the brand’s boutique, I asked a young salesperson if I could have a sample of this perfume. He told me no samples were available. I asked him about the tester and he pointed towards the center of the store. It was on a medium-sized glass display table. As I was moving towards the table, I was intercepted by a senior Asian coaching expert. I told him I wanted to experience the scent of Coach. She sprayed the perfume on a sample sheet and gave it to me to smell. Its smell was very luxurious. It reminded me of another perfume I loved, Tresor by Lancome. The perfume combined notes of amber, genet, jasmine, mimosa, vanilla and wood. Maybe I will gift this fragrance to the women in my life. And I buy it from the Palazzo coach.
After visiting the coach, I headed to the half Barneys New York. My visit to the venerable specialty store was the high point of my fragrance journey.
I first entered Barneys through this Shoppes entrance. But I wanted to have a real first visit experience. So, I raced to the first floor of the store and exited through its Strip entrance. Now I was ready for my grand entrance. I threw back my invisible long hair and walked down the Strip to Barneys. The first department I encountered was women’s accessories. It had almost every luxury brand I could imagine, like Fendi, Givenchy, Lanvin, Mac Jacobs, Mui Mui and Prada. After an adventure in the accessories department, I decided to do my real thing by visiting the men’s and women’s fragrance departments.
The women’s fragrance section was the first I toured. It is located on the first floor of Barneys, in the back of the store. Upon entering this section, I immediately spotted a fragrance expert and asked him the question, “Why is Barneys so special?” He replied that the retailer is unique in fragrances. It mainly carries niche fragrances. In other words, many of the colognes and perfumes sold at Barneys are available either at designer perfume boutiques or at Barneys. I was impressed by his response. A few minutes later, after speaking with the fragrance expert, I was struck by a lovely middle-aged blonde woman. He became my personal guide to this section and introduced me to its fragrances Aqua di Parma. Since 1916, its perfumes have always been loved by the world’s elite and those who wish to join this group. It is still distilled by hand and its packaging is still designed by hand. I smelled two of its fragrances and I have to admit that they suited my taste. But if you want to smell like the rich and famous, Aqua di Parma fragrances are a must. According to my fragrance guide, celebrities love it.
After my experience with Aqua di Parma, he took me to the left side of the fragrance department and showed me a strange machine. It was large and silver; it seemed medieval. I saw beakers, perfume bottles, pipes and weighing machines nearby. I looked above the machine and the name Le Labo appeared. According to my guide, this area was known as Le Labo Lab. This olfactory experience is exclusive to Barneys. Barneys experts can mix different scents to create a very personal perfume. This is a must have for perfume lovers and gift givers. Ready-made fragrances for men and women are also sold. One of the “premades” I tried was Rose 31. It smelled light, which meant it could be worn anytime, anywhere. Warm, spicy and woody notes created this masculine floral fragrance. I may have to add this to my fragrance wardrobe.
My experience with Le Labo ended and the guide showed me another niche brand. This brand was called Editions De Parfums by Federic Malle. Monsiuer Malle gathered the top noses in the fragrance industry to create 16 unique fragrances, according to another Barneys fragrance expert. These noses created scents for the top perfume houses in Paris. According to my guide, most fragrances from Editions de Parfums are unisex.
Barneys has created a unique fitting experience with this brand, according to my guide. He led me to two large metal-framed electrical booths that reminded me of the Tornado at the San Francisco Exploratorium. He mentioned that they were used to sample the brand’s fragrances. He turned one of them on, opened the top glass door and sprayed it with the scent of my choice. It was Fleshy rose, floral for both men and women. He closed the booth door and after a few minutes he opened it again and told me to sniff. He explained that the booths gave customers a realistic scent of Edition de Parfums. I thanked my guide for spending time with me and went to the men’s fragrance section on the third floor.
When I got to the third floor, I noticed something strange about the Barneys signs. The names of clothing designers were written on the light wooden floors of the store. I thought this type of display was very unique. Suddenly I noticed a counter of men’s fragrances. When I got there, I was greeted by a lovely young fragrance expert. He showed me Barneys exclusive cologne. It was called Bois 1920. The history of this cologne began in 1920 with Guido Galard. He experimented with perfumes and natural fragrances, which had always interested him. He eventually opened a perfumery called Bottega Italiana Spigo in Florence, Italy, which attracted many fragrance lovers. Unfortunately, the perfumery was closed five years later, as the son did not want to continue with the business. In 2005, his grandson founded Bois 1920 and reinterpreted Galard’s formula. After reading and hearing the Bois 1920s story, I wish I had smelled it when I visited Barneys. This is going on my sniff wish list
A young perfume expert also gave me a good summary of Barneys New York in Las Vegas. He told me that this retailer is unique. It’s cutting edge, classy and very humorous.
My fragrance journey at Palazzo Las Vegas finished. This beautiful hotel with its upscale shopping promenade is a great addition to the Las Vegas Strip. I’m sure it will compete well with other Strip destinations. So, if you visit my hometown, be sure to check out the Palazzo and its shops. I can assure you that you will be surprised.
