Blog Your Way To A Passive Income
What is a blog?
Millions of people do, from CEOs and business owners to stay-at-home moms and students. I like Blogger’s definition:
“Simply put, a blog is a website where you write stuff on an ongoing basis. New stuff appears at the top so visitors can read what’s new. Then they comment on it or link to it or email you. Or not.”
I think of my blog as my online journal, a place to record my thoughts and experiences and share them with a few or many. It’s much easier than creating a website, and best of all, it’s free (if you use free hosting platforms like Blogger or WordPress).
Blogging has at least three major advantages.
An easy way to create an online presence at minimal cost
Unlike a website, a blog is easy to set up, even if you’re new to the internet, and it doesn’t have to cost you a cent. (Okay, maybe it could cost you $8.95 a year if you want it hosted on your own server with your own domain name, which certainly looks more impressive than a URL that says: http://yourblog.blogspot.com) .
Easily keep in touch with visitors and potential customers
A blog offers a friendly and unobtrusive way to update many people without having to write separate emails. You can even add it to your existing website to post product or news updates.
Easily connect with new audiences
New technology like RSS feeds and audio and video clips make it easy to provide different ways to “talk” to people. You are no longer limited to text.
But the main difference between a website and a blog is that a blog is dynamic. New articles you post on your blog will be moved to the top and read first, while older ones will be archived. This is important because it means your content is always new and fresh, unlike a website you build and then leave to attract traffic. Or not.
Can I make money blogging?
Why not? Millions of internet marketers already use their websites to promote affiliate programs, newspapers, newsletters, MLM opportunities and information products. A blog is just another type of website.
But you and I know that having a website is just the first step. In the offline world, the key to sales success is location. The internet has different rules. It’s about traffic. Without traffic and without a steady stream of visitors who have the potential to convert into paying customers, your website will fail. The secret to internet success has been found. And few site owners know how to do it well. When you think about the billions of websites on the internet, standing out is a tall order indeed.
So how do you get your blog into the Top 50 or 100 on Yahoo or Google or MSN so that the people you’re trying to reach can see you?
The secret to getting traffic—not just any traffic, but people who are already deeply interested in your blog’s topic and what you have to offer—is content.
The secret to finding on the Internet
In order to be found on the Internet, you need to understand that you need to satisfy two parties: search engines and people. In order to be preferred by search engines, your blog pages must contain information that people are looking for. (There’s no point in publishing a blog that no one can find. Unless, of course, your goal is simply to have a private space to air your views and you don’t care if anyone elseknows about your blog.)
Search engines love fresh and relevant content on topics of interest to people. So, to increase your blog visibility and blog traffic, first fill it with quality content that is relevant and in demand.
Put yourself in the reader’s shoes. How do you and I find information on the Internet? Most of us start by entering keywords and phrases related to the topic we want to know more about. We then go through the links published by the search engine and click on the ones that are most likely to contain what we are looking for. So in order to get any of your pages “found” and high enough to actually be clicked on, it makes sense to write content around these critical keywords and phrases. This is a very rough idea of how search engine optimization works.
Give people the information they are looking for, make it relevant, make it friendly, readable and digestible and they will come.
But hang on, you say, content means writing, and I don’t know how to write.
Of course you do.
Do I have to be an expert writer?
A blog is not meant to be read like an academic essay or slick like a marketing pitch (it better not!). It just needs to read, appeal to your visitor’s emotions and sound like YOU. What makes you stand out among millions of blogs is YOU – your unique voice on a topic you love.
So start with great content in mind. Write yourself, or if you prefer, hire someone to write for you. Make your content friendly and comfortable for your visitors to read, just like sitting down to chat with a good friend over coffee.
People like to hear other people’s views, especially if those views resonate with something they believe in, or are fun, controversial, or passionate, or carry the ring of authenticity that has been made.
What am I talking about?
Choose a topic that you enjoy and that you can easily talk to someone about.
It could be about your pet dog and the 10 steps you went through to transport him from his home country to where you now live.
It could be about a place you recently visited. Make it more appealing to your readers by posting photos of different cuisines, sights not found in Lonely Planet, and residents.
This can be your own special list of resources that will help you achieve your personal goals very effectively.
It can be your story about a difficult experience, how you survived it, what you learned from it.
Everyone is an expert on themselves and their experiences. You never know what it is that someone else may be looking for or know or have gone through.
You are an expert in your niche
Every day, people depend on the Internet to find ways to do things better. You have something valuable to offer, even if you may not be aware of it yet. A topic you know by heart—how to plant a drought-tolerant garden or tune a piano—could save someone else hundreds of hours of valuable research time and effort. By offering your expertise, you help people get what they want faster and easier.
We all want things done faster, and we want it done now. Does this idea excite you? What I’m trying to say is that many people are willing to pay good money for gadgets and solutions that promise to make their lives and households and businesses run more smoothly. If you know how to position yourself as a solutions provider and can do it consistently over a period of time, you will start to build a reputation as an expert in your field. And if you go the extra mile by ensuring your information is always relevant, accurate and provides effective solutions, you gain something even more invaluable: a reputation as an honest solution provider.
The value of honesty
There is no price tag on honesty and trustworthiness. With so many get-rich-quick scams looking for credit cards from people eager to make money online, people are in desperate need of an expert they can trust. If you can be that expert, whose name do you think will come up first when someone needs a solution in your field? Readers who enjoy your writing and find it provides valuable information will keep coming back for updates. They will tell their friends about your blog. They request that updates be sent. They may even link their blogs to yours. This multiplier effect will help your blog get noticed by even more people. And all this without investing a cent.
If you decide to monetize your blog and monetize your efforts, guess what? Loyal fans of your readers will be more than happy to take your word for it that you recommend what solves their problem. At least they are willing to try your product. If so, congratulations! You have done what many online entrepreneurs cannot achieve; you’ve successfully converted your readers from passers-by to potential customers.
This is the beginning of a profitable blog.
How to blog your way to passive income
If you have a blog with great content and a list of loyal fans who have pre-sold your story, consider how you can take your blog monetization a step further. You can build all kinds of widgets into your blog to add dollars here and there. Google AdWords. Google Adsense. Text links. Affiliate links. E-books (if you write them yourself, that would be the best!). Hard products (e.g. dietary supplements). Soft products (eg software downloads). Income opportunities. Special offers (“Buy it and we’ll throw in $297 worth of bonuses!”). There are even bloggers who ask for a donation if what they’ve written has been helpful to you.
Experiment with different methods until you find the mixture that works best for you. And try to do it in style. There is no need to splash links and banners all over your page, as if you will not be noticed otherwise. Savvy Internet users are used to seeing links to recommended products and services, and even expect them. If you’ve provided more value than what your visitor expected and more than your competitors, your visitor has no reason to be offended that you’re now trying to make money off of them.
A word of warning though.
The money making part is the last. If you blog for the sole purpose of selling something and don’t give 100% to give your visitors quality information for free, you can be pretty sure you won’t get many repeat visitors. Anyone can put up a blog to promote their pet product or service, but few succeed in getting visitors to click through to a sales page, and one reason is that most people don’t like being sold to.
Buying is an emotional decision. When we decide to buy something, it may be because we have shopped and compared products and decided that THIS product on THIS site is most likely to fix what is missing in our lives. But it’s just as likely that we feel a special connection to THIS site because the owner of THAT site took the trouble to befriend us. Maybe he started by offering us something of value (information relevant to us) for FREE. Then, after building a rapport and making sure we could benefit from it, he casually mentioned that “by the way” he might have a solution to help us live healthier lives, use our time more productively, or create a website that makes money for us while we sleep .
What do you think would happen if he started hitting us with his income opportunity or product without us first knowing if it was what we wanted? We probably would have felt insulted and annoyed, and most likely would have left his blog ASAP and made a mental note to never return.
So, if you want to make a living from your blog, find the right formula.
First, provide great content. Make sure it is relevant to your customer. Do it for free. Second, build a relationship. Always be friendly and ready to serve. Be it a personal connection in an impersonal online marketplace.
Finally, recommend your product or service as a possible solution to the customer’s problem, but don’t get emotionally attached to the outcome. Your visitor may say “no” today, not because your product isn’t good, but because they’re not ready to commit.
Quality content drives traffic to your blog. Traffic gives you visibility and with it the opportunity to build relationships and share your product or service with people who are looking for solutions. Do it well and consistently and over time you will start making money from your blog.
