God Is Looking For A Few Good Men and Women: Are YOU One of Them?
Years ago, the Marine Corps had a slogan that said, “We’re looking for a few good men.” The idea behind the ad campaign was obvious: not everyone can be a Marine. The training and responsibilities are difficult. Anyone who wants to serve in the Marine Corps must be a kind of rugged individualist, willing to take orders, who works and plays well with others. These same qualities can be applied to people who want to serve God.
Our Heavenly Father is always looking for men and women who are willing to serve him. The sad truth is that he hasn’t always found them. In the book of Ezekiel, chapter 22 and verses 23-31 of the Old Testament Bible, the King James Bible says, “And the word of the Lord came unto me, Son of man, say unto him, Thou art the land that is not cleansed, neither hath it rained in the day of wrath. The conspiracy of his prophets is in the midst of it like a roaring lion that devours its prey; they have devoured souls; they have taken wealth and precious things; they have made many widows among them. His priests have broken my law and profaned my holy things: they have not distinguished between the holy and the profane, and have not distinguished between the unclean and the clean, and have hidden their eyes from my sabbaths, and I am profaned among them. His princes in their midst are like wolves, who prey on prey to shed blood and destroy souls for unfair gain. And his prophets have anointed them with a hardened wrath, seeing vanity, and prophesying lies to them, saying, T thus saith the Lord God, if the Lord hath not spoken. The people of the earth have used oppression and plundered and oppressed the poor and needy: yea, they have unjustly oppressed the stranger. And I looked for a man among them who would make a hedge and stand in the gap before me for the land, so that I would not destroy it, but I did not find one. Therefore I have poured out my indignation upon them; I have destroyed them with the fire of my wrath, I have paid their way upon their heads, says the Lord God.
The twenty-second chapter of Ezekiel is mainly devoted to explaining the sins of Jerusalem, the results of their actions, and God’s punishment for them. This is a very sad turn of events. The problem begins when prophets who are supposed to serve God serve themselves. They do not obey or obey his laws. This disobedience soon infects the priests. They also begin to disregard God’s law to the point where people are no longer told what is right and what is wrong. Like many churches today, they create a sort of “do your own thing” religion that ignores many biblical teachings and exhortations about the local church and believers as a whole.
The corrupt circle will be complete when the leaders of the people, who have been lied to by the prophets and priests, will also follow their own ways. They oppress the people to make themselves rich. The poor and strangers become the easiest targets and most vulnerable victims of their betrayal. It’s amazing to see that God still wants to make things right in the midst of all these evil deeds. He just needs someone who is willing to “stand up for the earth in the void before me.” Unfortunately, he can’t find that person.
God was looking for a person who would tell the people the truth based on the laws he gave. It was really just a matter of obedience, but no one wanted to step up and take the chance of getting sidelined or punishing those who didn’t want to serve God the way he taught them. Everyone decided to just “go with the flow” and not rock the boat. The results were tragic and progressive. The prophets and priests continued to lie, while the leaders of the people continued to oppress them. God turned their own lies and wickedness against them and let their enemies overcome them.
Today we also see a sad progression of events based on the disobedience of those who claim to speak for God. Many Christian pastors, evangelists, teachers and church leaders have turned from God’s word to false teachings. For example, the fundamentals of the faith, including the divine nature, virgin birth, sinless life, substitutionary death, triumphant resurrection, and visible return of Jesus Christ, are no longer taught or practiced. They question the inerrancy and inerrancy of the Bible and use versions that are corrupted and unreliable. They ignore the teaching that people should be born again by confessing their sins to God and accepting Jesus as their Savior. Even some who believe in the second birth deny the biblical teaching that all believers should be active soul winners. The book of 1 Peter, chapter 2 and verse 5 of the New Testament Bible makes this clear in the King James Bible where it says, “You, like living stones, build up a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God. by Jesus Christ.”
Like the Marines, God is looking for some good men and women to serve. This ministry begins with your ability to follow his simplest teachings. First, you must become a Christian. If you do not know for sure that you will go to heaven after death, God tells us that you will know for sure when you accept Jesus Christ as your Savior. Just pray to God, admit that you are a sinner and ask Jesus to come into your heart and forgive all your sins. The New Testament Bible book of Romans chapter 10 and verses 9-10 says in the King James Bible, “If you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart believing is righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made for salvation.”
Rescue is the first step. Next is finding a good church to attend and join. This church should be a Bible-believing, Christ-honoring house of God. If you find a church home, you must be baptized to join. The Bible teaches baptism by immersion. John the Baptist used this method, and the Word of God gives us a great example in the New Testament Bible, Acts, chapter 8 and verses 26-39, where the King James Bible says, “And the angel of the Lord spoke to Philip, saying, Arise and go southward , which goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza, which is a desert!” And he got up and went, and behold, an Ethiopian man, a great eunuch under Candace, queen of the Ethiopians, who had charge of all his wealth and had come to Jerusalem to worship. He returned and sat in his chariot, reading from the prophet Isaiah. Then the Spirit said to Philip, “Go near and join this chariot. And Philip ran to him and heard him reading from the prophet Isaiah, and asked, “Do you understand what you are reading?” And he asked, “How can I, if no one guides me?” And he desired Philip to come up and sit down. The scripture he read was, He was like a sheep to the slaughter; and like a dumb lamb before his shearer, so he opened not his mouth. In his humiliation, his court was taken away. And who declares his lineage? for his life is taken from the earth. And the eunuch answered Philip, and said, Of whom speaketh the prophet? of himself or of another man? Then Philip opened his mouth and began from the same scripture and preached Jesus to him. And as they went on their way, they came to a water. And the eunuch said, ‘Look, here is water! what prevents me from being baptized? And Philip said, ‘If you believe with all your heart, you can do it.’ And he answered and said, “I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.” And he ordered the chariot to stand still, and they both went down into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him. And when they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught Philip, so that the eunuch saw him no more, and he went his way rejoicing.
If you are a member of a church, you need to start studying God’s Word. There are two ways you should do this. First, by attending church services, which usually include mid-week Bible study, Sunday school, and worship. The pastor and others will teach you the Word. Second, you must read God’s Word for yourself. Get a King James Version Bible and start with the book of Luke in the New Testament Bible. It is one of the four gospels and the only one that really explains how John the Baptist and Jesus are related. It also gives us an insight into Jesus’ childhood.
Prayer is another important step in obedience that helps you become someone God can use. Pray at least twice a day: when you wake up and just before you go to bed. Pray for yourself and others. The book of Matthew in the New Testament Bible clearly states that prayer is just asking. In Matthew chapter 7 and verses 7-11, the King James Bible says, “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you; for everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds, and it will be opened to him who knocks . Or which of you is the man to whom he gives a stone when he eats bread? or when he is looking for a fish, does he give him a snake? you who are wicked know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will you give heavenly Father is good to those who ask him?”
Another important step in serving God is deciding to tithe. A tithe is ten percent of your income. This can seem like a lot, especially if you don’t make a lot of money. But God uses this money to finance the local church and allows believers to do His will. He also promises to give back to those who give to him. The book of Malachi, chapter 3 and verse 10 of the Old Testament Bible says in the King James Bible, “Bring all the tithes of the barn, that there may be food in my house, and now test me with this, says the Lord of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour out blessing, then there is no room left to receive it.”
God doesn’t ask you to be saved, baptized, go to church, pray, read the Bible, or tithe for him, he asks for you! By doing this, you will avoid hell, grow in faith, and gain confidence in the Lord. Just as basic training helps recruits become Marines by developing organizational skills and physical fitness, obedience to God’s Word builds spiritual strength and helps a Christian better prepare to serve the Lord. In return for your obedience, God will bless you, take care of you, and be there for you when you need him most. God is looking for a couple of good men and women. If you are ready to serve him, your marching orders are written in the Bible.
