Top 10 Tips to Balancing Work and Personal Life
In the age of knowledge we live in, it’s easy to get consumed with work and forget about your personal life. After all, there’s always more to do, right? But as the old saying goes, “No one has ever laid on their deathbed and wished they had spent more time in the office!”
Here are some tips for finding the right balance between your work (especially for knowledge workers and information entrepreneurs) and your personal life.
1. Decide what is most important to you in your life – long term. One exercise to help focus on this is writing a eulogy—really! What would you like people to say about you when you’re dead? Whatever it is, notice how much you strive for that quality, goal, or purpose in your life. If you’re not doing it now—or not as much as you’d like—how can you start doing more?
2. Create a vision of your ideal lifestyle. They say, “If you don’t know where you’re going, every road will lead you there.” If you don’t create a vision for your work and personal life – just the way you want it, you won’t know when you’ve arrived! You find yourself “trying but never getting there”. So write down a descriptive statement about how you want your schedule, your workspace, your home, your clients, your relationships, your body, everything in your life—just as if you were writing it to a movie producer. Then get down to building your life!
3. If you work, work; if you play, play. If every time you leave your office (even if it’s in the spare bedroom!) you keep thinking about work, leave your work phone on, or check email later in the evening, you’re failing to draw the line between work and play. This means you’re not getting the full benefit of your “down time”…and you’re not recharging the internal batteries that allow you to do what you do well. Dedicate working hours to work and play fully when you’re away from work… so you’ll have more energy and more joy.
4. Avoid multitasking. I know, it’s hard! But research shows that people are only 40 percent more productive when they multitask than when they focus on one thing at a time. Give your full attention to what you’re doing – or whoever you’re talking to (!), then move on to the next task. Live intentionally, one task and segment at a time. Your quality of life will improve, you will be able to produce higher quality work, and you will create quality relationships that will flourish in the light of your diffused focus.
5. Plan your free time in advance. How many days a week would you like to work? How much vacation are you taking this year? If you don’t set it aside beforehand, it’s likely that work commitments will eat up the time you would have taken off. Most information entrepreneurs should plan to take at least two to four weeks of vacation a year—even in the first year. Add it to your charges and block it in advance. You’ll be glad you did!
6. Implement at least two or three “power hours” every workday. The typical coach and information entrepreneur is distracted most of the day. “Power hours” are when you make a list of at least 5 priority tasks, set a timer, and focus only on those tasks for that hour. No emails, no phone calls, no distractions. And get them done! Start with a goal of at least two of these every day.
7. Set goals for both your professional and personal life. Take a moment to review your daily planner (Palm, Outlook calendar, wall calendar, etc.) for the past month or year and note how many of the entries relate to your work. If you’re like most people, 75-90 percent of your content is business or work related! Start setting at least one goal each day for your personal life and one relationship—along with your work goals. This in itself immediately brings balance to your life!
8. Delegate whatever you can. If you’ve used the fee formula in our Launch Your Practice book to determine your fees, you know what your time is valued at – your hourly rate. If you’re doing something that can’t be billed at this rate, you should be looking to delegate it ASAP! This includes running to the post office, office supply store, and Fedex; updating the website; answering routine inquiries; removing spam from your email account; answering the phone; and many other tasks. Your goal is to get as much revenue-generating time as possible in your dedicated work time.
9. Exercise regularly. When I interviewed people who had mastered transition for my Simon and Schuster book on the subject, one theme stood out: Each of these people exercised regularly during their normal times and even more so during periods of stress and transition. Almost all successful infopreneurs share this trait – and that’s why major hotel chains have improved their fitness facilities so significantly for traveling infopreneurs.
10. Meditate and activate the connection with the God of your understanding. Feeling connected to something bigger than yourself can help put the challenges of everyday work and life into perspective in a way that nothing else can. By practicing daily meditation to achieve a calm, centered state and connection to your Higher Power, you’ll find that you can maintain that state even when life gets difficult. It is also proven to improve health!
