Concept

Acne is an inflammatory skin condition characterized by skin eruptions around hair follicles. It is a common disease that mainly affects teenagers, but it can also occur in adults, especially those in their 20s and 30s. In these people, acne can appear as different types of acne, such as comedones (blackheads), papules (red, hard bumps), pustules (pustules), and less commonly, cysts and abscesses. The lesions are located on the face and less often on the back, chest, shoulders and neck. Acne needs treatment and there is no need to wait for nature to solve the problem because it is very difficult to predict how long it will take to completely disappear. The treatment can prevent the formation of scars or marks, thereby improving the complexion and physical appearance of the skin.

Reasons

Acne is caused by the many hormonal changes that occur during adolescence. During puberty, the sebaceous glands (located deep in the skin) produce an oily substance called sebum caused by testosterone (the male hormone). The sebum comes to the surface through small tubes (channels) and their opening is a pore.

A blockage in the sebaceous ducts causes sebum to be trapped, forming pimples, which can be:

– White or closed

– Black or loose (blackheads)

The black color is due to the effect of air on the sebum held in the pores. Sometimes the excess sebum in the ducts and walls of the ducts swells and bursts, expelling the sebum into the skin, resulting in red, hard pimples (internal) or abscesses. Along with this, sebum remains an ideal breeding ground for skin bacteria, causing more radiation and inflammation.

Other causes of acne, especially in adults, include:

– Pregnancy

– Polycystic ovary syndrome

– Cushing’s syndrome

– use of anabolic steroids

– Keratinization disorders

– Use of medicines containing halogens, lithium, barbiturates or androgens.

Affecting factors

Seasons: Better in summer and worse in spring and fall.

Menstruation: Almost all women experience acne breakouts with their periods.

Menopause: Hormonal changes during menopause can cause certain types of menopausal acne.

Nerves: stress, exams, lack of sleep, etc. Make acne worse.

Constipation: Makes acne worse or more resistant to treatment. To avoid this, do the following.

– Food should be sufficient and varied, mostly based on vegetables and legumes (beetroot, spinach, cabbage, cauliflower, carrot, tomato, lettuce, endive, artichoke, lentils, beans, peas, etc.).

– Limit consumption of certain foods such as meat, bread, flour and chocolate.

– Drink plenty of fluids (1-2 liters of water per day), especially in the morning after waking up (water or orange juice).

– Avoid or reduce red wine consumption.

– Avoid a sedentary lifestyle, try to move (walk or go to the gym before meals).

– Maintain the habit of passing stools at the same time, especially after breakfast.

Diet: Certain foods make acne worse. The most notable are: chocolate, nuts and their derivatives, milk, cheese, yogurt and other dairy products, foods made with a lot of oil or butter, pizza, beer, alcohol, coffee, tea, spices, too much iodized salt, pork, seafood (shrimp, oysters ), citrus fruits and especially food fried in butter or fat.

Fresh vegetables, fruits, juices and bread help to improve acne.

General measures

-Wash your skin daily to control excess oil and bacteria that aggravate acne-prone skin.

– Facial cleansing.

-Wash your hair often and comb it back to keep it out of your face. Oilier hair should be washed more often. If you have dandruff, you should use an anti-dandruff shampoo at least 3 times a week and inform your dermatologist.

-Men with beard acne should try electric and non-electric razors to see which irritates their skin less. Shaving should be gentle so as not to cut into pimples, and the blade should be as sharp as possible.

-Do not apply pressure, scratch or rub the injury as this may increase the skin damage.

– Follow your diet.

– Avoid using greasy creams.

– Exfoliate once a week to stimulate cell renewal, unclog pores and remove dead cells and sebum. It gives smooth skin without blemishes.

Treatment

There are different ways to treat acne:

– Prevent new lesions and treat old ones.

– Topical medications that dry up sebum and promote skin separation:

. Glycolic, salicylic, azelaic and mandelic acid

. Benzoyl peroxide sulfur

. Oral contraceptives

. Local antibiotics: clindamycin, erythromycin.

. Oral antibiotics: doxycycline, minocycline, limecycline.

. Vitamin A derivatives (tretinoin, retinol)

UV rays

Acne heals in the sun, so clinical treatment with UV lamps is also recommended. Patients are recommended to be treated 2-3 times a week. To avoid scarring, the treatment can be done with lasers in case of a large inflammation.

Acne scars

Some acne patients have unsightly scars (dimples and red spots), especially on the face and back. Scars can be repaired with chemical peels performed by qualified personnel.

For exfoliation, lotions with concentrated fruit acids (glycolic, lactic, citric or salicylic) are applied to the face using gauze to stimulate the skin’s natural regeneration mechanisms. It smooths the skin and stimulates collagen synthesis to fill wrinkles and scars. Peels also help eliminate pimples and blackheads. The procedure involves applying fruit acid to the face every 1-2 weeks up to 6-8 times. After that, maintenance treatment must be done every 2-3 months. There are other scar treatments, such as lasers and capacitive currents (INDIBA), which are completely painless and without side effects. In such cases, the patient must visit the clinic 2 times a week, for a minimum of 2 months. There is also a procedure called laser – carbon laser abrasion that is currently the most recommended for acne.

Summary

– Wash your face 2 times a day with a suitable soap. Afterwards, apply the indicated products.

– Avoid certain foods: chocolate or cocoa derivatives, nuts (sunflower seeds, almonds, etc.), seafood, hard cheeses (Roquefort, Camembert, etc.).

– Avoid contact with hair and facial skin (bangs, long hair, etc.).

– Avoid using cosmetic products until the acne has healed. It is recommended to use oil-free makeup.

– Avoid greasy sunscreen products. Use alcohol-based formulas to avoid clogging pores.

– Wash your hair regularly 3 times a week.

– Avoid frequent head support with hands (passive study, etc.).

– Avoid conflicting emotional situations such as stress, nervousness and fatigue.

– Avoid skin contact with greasy or oily environments (kitchens, etc.).

– Change pillowcases often.

– Develop the habit of taking care of your skin, because beauty emphasizes your image.
