Does Late Or Early Ovulation Influence My Ability to Get Pregnant Or My Baby’s Gender? My Opinion

I’ve been getting this question more and more lately. Some women who write to me follow my advice to use ovulation predictors to make sure you know exactly when you ovulate. Many of these same women are somewhat surprised to find that although they are ovulating, it is either much earlier or much later than they had always expected it to be.

For example, some women find that they actually ovulate much earlier than mid-cycle, and I actually had one woman tell me that she didn’t get a positive result until day 24. I also had someone tell me they tested positive as early as the 7th day. These women often wonder if their early or late status affects their fertility or affects the gender of their baby. They want to know if there is anything they need to do differently to make sure they get pregnant with the gender they want. I will address these issues in the next article.

Healthy ovulation and fertility plus intercourse with a healthy partner should equal pregnancy (no matter when it happens 🙂 The basic formula for pregnancy is conception at or around the time of fertility or ovulation. As long as this is achieved (assuming there are no medical problems with you or your partner), you should eventually become pregnant.

Some women worry that early or late ovulation means they have fertility problems. In my experience, this is usually not accurate. I personally ovulate quite late in my cycle (sometimes as late as day 21 or even later) and I’m definitely a mom with successful conceptions and pregnancies. A woman’s ovulation day can vary from month to month for a variety of reasons, many of which are beyond your control. There is no “right” or “better” day for this to happen. And the actual calendar day on which this happens usually doesn’t indicate how successful you’ll be at conceiving.

As long as you can successfully fertilize a healthy egg with healthy sperm in the right amount of time—regardless of when that happens to your body—you should eventually have success. Worry more about what is the right time for your unique body. Everyone is truly different, and just because your experience is different doesn’t mean it’s wrong.

Does late or early ovulation affect the gender of your baby?: Many people who ask this question are actually confused about variables. They may have heard that fertilization before ovulation favors a girl, while intercourse after ovulation favors a male. For the most part, this is accurate (although there are other variables to consider, such as acidity and the sexual positions used.)

However, being early or late in your ovulation date doesn’t really affect this equation. The two variables you need to worry about are if you’re having intercourse in relation to when you ovulated (meaning when you tested positive). This is a variable that needs to be addressed. The concern is not when the positive reading happened or what the calendar said when it happened. Much more important is when you had intercourse in relation to when your attempts happened.

I hope this article has shown you that as long as you and your partner are known to be healthy, you don’t necessarily need to worry if you get a positive reading sooner or later than you thought. The actual date is not as important as getting that positive reading. And there are countless moms out there who have very successfully conceived during a later or earlier ovulatory cycle. The plan should be the same. Focus on having intercourse at the right time, with the right acidity and using the right positions. The rest should fall into place.
