Excel Tip – Paste A Name Into An Excel Formula

In this article I have a very quick, easy and very useful way to use named ranges that you have already created in your Excel workbook. If you haven’t used named ranges in Excel before, here are three great reasons to use them.

  1. Your formulas make more sense.
  2. You can easily edit your formulas.
  3. You can easily write super fast formulas.

If you need to know how to create a named range in Excel, you can follow one of the two ways below.

1. METHOD

Use the formula bar

First select a cell or group of cells | Click on the name box | Enter a name for your range

(Please note that these names have a few conditions and/or restrictions)

1- they can be up to 255 characters long

2- they must start with either a letter or an underscore _

3- they may contain points

4- they must not contain spaces or other punctuation marks

2. METHOD

First, open a new Excel workbook

  1. Go to the Insert menu

  2. Press Name

  3. Go to Define

  • A Define Name dialog box will open for you

  • Enter a range name

  • You can adjust the range of cells in the reference box if necessary

  • Click the OK button

Once you’ve set up your named ranges, they’re ready to use in any formula you create in your workbook. Start typing a formula, and if you need to use a named range, all you have to do is do the following

  • Press the F3 key

  • The name Manager Box is displayed

  • After that, all the ranges with your name will be displayed

  • Select the name of the range you want to include in your formula

  • Press the OK button

Here is an example to work through. I have a named range tax rate, which contains the tax rate I want to use in my formulas. Also, in cell A2 of my worksheet, the sales value is 10,500. I want to create a new value in cell B2 that is the actual tax amount that applies to the sales value of 10,500, where my VAT value is 23%. Let’s proceed to create the formula in cell D2 of my worksheet as follows

=A2*tax_rate

When you’re ready to add a tax rate to your formula, simply press F3 and select the specified range from the list.
