Racing Pigeon Feed – Energy Sources

I know the racing season is stressful for both you and your racing pigeons. You need to make sure you train them enough and most importantly feed them the right amount before the big race!

So what is the right amount of energy to feed your racing pigeons? Well, it depends on what type of race it is, if it’s a short race it will take less energy than a long distance race. It’s pretty obvious now, isn’t it? But how much is enough is the question I want answered. At the moment we are just going with what has worked and what hasn’t, we don’t know exactly how much energy a pigeon needs for a long distance race.

For example, in long distance racing, I put raw peanuts in the feed of the racing pigeons because it gives them longer lasting energy, which usually works well for me. But who knows if I’m giving them too much or too little or if there’s something better out there?

So my advice when thinking about what to put in racing pigeon feed is to learn from experienced fanciers what works and what doesn’t. There is no formula out yet that will give you the exact amount. Although I have heard that some universities are working on something!

Make your pigeon feed light, with very little or no peanuts and the like, as they need to be lighter and require only a small amount of energy. But for long distance races, add peanuts to give you energy for longer, and don’t increase the protein like some fans think you should for races. It’s energy we want, not protein. Proteins are excellent nutrients to put in the feed of racing pigeons during the breeding season, but not for racing. Good fats are another thing you want in long distance runners to fuel them for the race as carbs are used up pretty quickly at the start of the race. Carbohydrates and fats are your energy sources that you need to take time to learn and use for pigeons.

Take this information and try it yourself, see what works for your pigeons. There’s nothing wrong with grabbing a bunch of information from different sources and trying it out for yourself and seeing what works for you and what doesn’t. This is how you can be successful in the sport of racing pigeons!
