Calculate Working Days Between 2 Date

Calculating working days is always a challenge for all of us. Although the concept is simple, its calculation has never been easy. A commonly used approach is to physically count the days using a calendar. This approach is prone to human error, and so we tend to count a few more times to make sure we’ve counted correctly. Imagine the burden of enumerating numerous sets of dates. Things would have been different if you use MS Excel because it helps you get answers quickly and accurately in many different ways.

The first option is to use a formula called NETWORKDAYS. The formula is very easy to use. All you have to do is enter the formula, enter the start date and end date. The formula instantly displays the number of business days between two given dates, based on a five-day work week. If you want to exclude holidays from the calculation, simply enter the holidays you want to exclude in the formula. You can enter all the holidays of the year and the NETWORKDAYS formula can pick the relevant holidays as and when they fall between the start and end dates. If you have not activated the Analysis Toolkit add-in, you may not be able to find this formula in your Excel application. Some of you may need to install an add-in in Excel. This add-on contains extra powerful formulas that most users don’t know, like the NETWORKDAYS formula.

Another option is to use a combination of formulas to calculate the working days as shown (D6 contains the start date and E6 contains the end date:

SUMPRODUCT(–(WEEKDAY(ROW(INDIRECT($D6&”:”&$E6)),2)

It uses the power of array formulas. An IMPLICIT formula converts a text reference to a valid range reference.

SUMPRODUCT(–(WEEKDAY(ROW(INDIRECT ($D6&”:”&$E6)),2)ROW(IMPLICIT($D6&”:”&$E6)),2)WEEKDAY formula for all listed dates (invisibly) and identify those dates that match the mentioned condition(s) (if the dates are earlier than or same as Friday ie Monday to Friday).

SUMPRODUCT(–(DAY OF THE WEEK(ROW(INDIRECT($D6&”:”&$E6)),2)Using the SUMPRODUCT formula, it adds all the ones and zeros found in the date range in an invisible table and gives you the total number of days from Monday to Friday each week.

Using the same formula but changing the criteria SUMPRODUCT(–(WEEKDAY(ROW(INDIRECT($D6&”:”&$E6)),2)=5))*0.5

If we add these 2 formulas together, we can calculate the number of working days based on a 5.5 day work week.

=SUMPRODUCT(–(WEEKDAY(ROW(INDIRECT($D6&”:”&$E6)),2)SUMPRODUCT(–(DAY OF THE WEEK(ROW(INDIRECT($D6&”:”&$E6)),2)=6))*0.5

To calculate the number of working days in a month, we have used another formula in our salary template.
