Squalene, Lanolin, Castor Oil and Vitamin E Combined – Unique Treatment For Skin, Hair and Nails

This article describes four natural ingredients that combine to create a non-greasy formula that moisturizes skin, nails, and hair and can be used as a makeup remover. Most of the ingredients, except one, have been around and known for centuries. Each contributes to a unique oil with many beneficial skin and health properties.

Squalene (Squalene research only began in the early 1900s in Japan, unlike the other three ingredients which have been used, researched and tested for centuries) is an oil derived from multiple sources. The most interesting source is extracted from the livers of deep-sea whales that live in ocean waters at depths of 600 to 1,000 meters (about 1,970 to 3,280 feet). At this depth there is little sunlight, extreme pressure and low oxygen supply. Their success in living and thriving at such depths is due to their livers, which make up almost a quarter of their total body weight. Among other things, these deep-sea sharks were found to be immune to cancer and some other diseases, which is surprising when they live in the ocean’s low-oxygen water.

In the early 1900s, Japanese scientists discovered the initial benefits of shark liver extract and began experimenting with some applications. From a chemical point of view, squalene is an unsaturated hydrocarbon that produces oxygen with water. As an oxygen carrier, squalene plays a key role in maintaining health. Another source of squalene is olive oil. Scientists have confirmed the positive effects of olive oil on health for decades. There have been documented results of a reduction in the incidence of internal cancers in cultures with a diet high in olive oil.

Recent studies have identified squalene as a natural preservative in human sebum. Tallow is a common lubricant for hairy and non-hairy skin. It keeps the skin supple and forms a protective bacterial and fungicidal coating on the skin that helps retain moisture on the skin’s surface. These findings encourage the use of squalene in dermatological applications. Squalene has been shown to be useful in topical healing applications. It mixes easily with other ingredients and increases the rate of penetration of the squalene/drug compound through the epidermis.

Lanolin is obtained from sheep’s wool. In its pure form, it is a wax that has many different uses in both industry and medicine. For this write-up, we are not dealing with the industrial use, but rather the medical use of lanolin. It has been used for centuries as a cream to smooth the skin. It is hypoallergenic and bacteriostatic. Lanolin as an ointment is known and used by nursing mothers all over the world for sore and cracked nipples. In addition, it has proven beneficial properties as a chapped lip balm, diaper rash treatment, moisturizing dry and itchy skin, softening calluses, hair treatment, minor cuts, sunburns, and abrasions.

Lanolin, like squalene, is easily absorbed through the skin. This feature ensures a quick effect of the healing properties of lanolin. In one form or another, lanolin has been used in health and beauty treatments since ranchers learned to press it from sheep’s wool.

Castor oil is extracted from castor beans. Beans are grown mainly in India, Brazil and China. Castor oil is also known for its healing effects. It is also used as a chemical precursor or additive, which is easily combined with other ingredients and does not lose its medicinal properties. When used on the skin, it penetrates quickly and deeply thanks to its molecular weight. This allows castor oil components to be used in skin conditioners, shampoos, lipsticks and lip balms. Additional uses include it as an anti-inflammatory agent, pain reliever during ultrasound, in prescription antifungal creams, chemotherapy, and more. Castor oil is so widely used that there is a strong global commodity market based on its sale and distribution.

Vitamin E is the fourth ingredient in our mix. Vitamin E is a collective name for a group of fat-soluble compounds with a characteristic antioxidant effect. Antioxidants protect cells from the harmful effects of free radicals. Free radicals damage cells and can contribute to the development of cardiovascular disease and cancer. Our body is exposed to free radicals through the environment i.e. cigarette smoke, air pollution, UV rays from the sun and more.

Many foods provide vitamin E in its natural form, including nuts, seeds, vegetable oils, green leafy vegetables, and fortified cereals. Its success with free radicals and the ease of combining it with other ingredients makes it a natural topical skin oil.
