For a vehicle, home or business application, when referring to window tint, one of the most important features is how much light the tint lets through. Regardless of the application, all window tinting is measured by the materials Visible Light Transmission Level (VLT). In simple terms, the VLT value is the percentage of visible light that passes through the exterior of a vehicle, building or home into the interior. The lower the VLT percentage, the darker the shade and the more outside light it blocks. A tint with a VLT value of 5% indicates that the window film transmits only 5% of the outside light, while a film with a VLT value of 50% transmits 50% of the light from the outside. In addition, since professionals refer to the shade, they also offer shades in different colors, they usually identify it by the color of the shade and the VLT value. For example, a shade of charcoal with a VLT of 5% is known as charcoal 5%. Similarly, a green colored film with a VLT of 50% is called green 50%.

Therefore, window tinting professionals use a simple formula to calculate the final VLT value of the installed window tint:

V1 (glass VLT value) x V2 (tint VLT value) = V3 (final VLT value)

For example, let’s say that the legal limit for vehicle window tint is 30% and the VLT value for the vehicle’s glass is 75%. Since we already know the VLT value of the window and the final VLT value we want to achieve, we simply need to rearrange the formula to calculate the appropriate pitch to be fitted as follows:

V3 (final VLT value) ÷ V1 (glass VLT) = V2 (tone VLT value)

0.30 (30%) ÷ 0.75 (75%) = 0.40 (40%)

According to this formula, installing a window shade with a VLT value of 40% gives a final VLT value of 30% as desired. Professional installers who use this formula save their clients a significant amount of money not only on traffic tickets for illegally tinted windows, but also on the reinstallation of window tint, which most traffic courts require when a driver is ticketed for illegally tinted windows.
