## How Much Does Your Air Compressor Cost You in Electrical Energy?

Have you ever wondered how much of your electric bill goes to running your air compressor? Read on and we’ll show you how to find out.

Before we see how much electricity costs, let’s see how it is measured. When you buy gas, you are charged by the gallon. When you buy electricity, you are charged by the kilowatt hour (KWH). If you use 1000 watts for 1 hour, this unit of energy is called a kilowatt-hour. Kilowatt hour is best known as the billing unit of energy delivered to consumers by electric companies.

If you know how much it’s costing you in electricity… then you can research ways to REDUCE those costs and save money… and you can measure your savings.

Seven steps to calculate the electricity cost of running an air compressor:

Follow these first three steps to find out your electricity cost per kilowatt hour (KWH). Let’s use some average examples to help you see how it works)

1. Find your electric utility bill for the facility where your air compressor operates and find the total amount due on your utility bill.

2. Find the total number of kilowatts used on the utility bill

3. Use this FORMULA: Total amount payable ÷ Total kWh used = Cost of KWH

Example:

Total amount due eg: \$300.00

Total kWh used, e.g.: 2500

Amount payable divided by total KWH used

\$300.00 ÷ 2500 KWH used = 0.12 per KWH

Results: Your cost per kilowatt hour is \$0.12 cents

(you use your cost per kWh in the following formula)

In the next 4 steps – we will find out the ELECTRICITY COST of running your air compressor

(we’ll use some average examples to help you see how this works)

4. Determine your TOTAL HORSEPOWER (HP) using this formula:

Engine nameplate HP (EX: 25 hp) X 110% = (27.5 hp)

NOTE. Most air compressors @ Max PSI use 110% of rated power

5. Calculate your ANNUAL working hours:

# Operating hours per day X # days per week X # weeks per year operating = total equipment time per year.

(Example: 10 hours a day x 5 days a week x 52 weeks = 2600 HOURS)

6. Find your MOTOR EFFICIENCY (EFF):

You can find the MOTOR EFFICIENCY in percentages on the motor nameplate. (Example=.90 %)

It is the ratio of input power minus output power.

7. Use this FORMULA:

Total HP x.746* x compressor hours per year x kWh cost ÷ motor efficiency = your annual electricity cost

Using the EXAMPLES we have provided… you will see how to calculate your annual electricity costs:

27.5 hp x 746* x 2600 hours x \$0.12 ÷.90 = \$7111.87 per year to run the air compressor

SAMPLE ANNUAL ELECTRIC COST PER AIR CONDITIONER = \$7111.87

*NOTE. Where does “.746” come from?

It takes 746 watts of electrical energy per hour to convert one horsepower into mechanical energy.

KWH = your cost per 1000 watts of electricity per hour. KILOWATT per HP = 0.746 watts
