## How To Calculate Cubic Metres (CBM) When Shipping

Determining cubic meters or CBM is the first step you should take in deciding how to ship your cargo. You don’t want to ship FCL cargo as FCL, and you don’t want to ship FCL as FCL, unless you’ve obviously reached or exceeded the break-even point for your cargo, which I teach in FCL vs. FCL consolidation.

The CBM of the shipment is always calculated

For sea transport, the idea is to calculate CBM in meters. If you are 320 cm tall

then convert it to 3.2 meters before starting the calculation.

If you are 45 cm, your formula is 0.45 meters.

A 20-foot general-purpose or dry container holds a maximum of 33.2 CBM, while a 40-foot general-purpose or dry container holds 67.7 CBM.

A 40-foot tall cube that provides more room for packing and holds a maximum of 76.3 CBM.

All of the above depends on your product line and how it is packaged.

40ft General Purpose Containers and High Cube Containers may only be used for bulk cargo, not heavy cargo. I discuss this point further in my article on cargo weight and road weight limits.

Also keep in mind the length of your cargo, you can’t pack 13m steel pipes into a 40ft general purpose container as it is only 12,036m long. In this case, suitable equipment is required.

For air transport shipments, the airline industry uses the following

If you have 5 identical boxes measuring 23cm x 34cm x 56cm (LxWxH)

Let’s say the actual weight of each of the five boxes is 10 kg.

First, you need to separate the volume indicator from the actual weight.

(23x34x56) div 6000 per 10kgs box

= 43792 divided by 6000

= 7.30 kg per box

For 5 boxes: 7.30 x 5 For 5 boxes: 10 x 5

= 36.5 kg = 50 kg

The actual weight to be declared to the airline here is the actual weight

from boxes weighing 50 kg.
