Movie Review – Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked (2011) (G)
Four years ago, I was a bit calm Alvin and the Chipmunks, although in retrospect it would probably be a lot harder for me. Two years ago I had no mercy Alvin and the Chipmunks: Squeakquel. This year I am facing Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked. I didn’t feel the strong dislike I felt for the previous film. Instead, I went through the entire eighty-seven minutes with numb indifference. This is because this time I felt it was made for very young children. There’s no complicated plot, no deep character development, no messages that haven’t already been delivered; it’s just a bright, colorful, goofy, innocent movie. Indeed, it is the first in the series to receive a G rating. I guess it’s no longer a joke about you eating your brother’s random poo and pretending it’s a raisin.
Parents, beware: a few jokes have been added for your enjoyment. I’ll do you the favor of not spoiling the two I noticed (if there’s a joke I missed, consider that a bonus). You deserve at least that much if you’re planning to take your kids, whom you surely love very much, to see it. 99.9% of this movie is made for them and only them. They respond to bold colors, light physical chews, and the cuteness of the title characters, all computer-generated rodents with fluffy cheeks, little twitchy noses, big expressive eyes, and mesmerizing helium voices. The same goes for their female counterparts Chipette, who were introduced in the second chapter and are now part of the formula. If your kids learn some truly heartwarming lessons about responsibility, growth, trust, forgiveness, and redemption in the movie, look up to the heavens and thank your lucky stars.
Here’s the story. The Chipmunks – Alvin (voiced by Justin Long), Simon (voiced by Matthew Gray Gubler), and Theodore (voiced by Jesse McCartney) – along with the Chipettes – Brittany (voiced by Christina Applegate), Jeanette (voiced by Anna Faris), and Eleanor (voiced by Amy Poehler) – and their human adopter Dave Seville (Jason Lee) goes on a cruise for a vacation. Alvin, who feels like a baby, rebels against Dave’s rules by being a troublemaker. Unfortunately, his antics get all six shingles into hot water; the kite they first rode for fun breaks loose and flies out to sea. Soon they end up on a tropical island. They meet Zoe (Jenny Slate), a stranded young woman who claims to have been there for eight or nine years. No one really knows how he got there, but it is strongly suggested that he is missing a few coconuts from the palm tree.
As they struggle to survive in the wild, Simon is bitten by a spider. Its venom doesn’t kill him, though it makes him think he’s a thrill-seeking, passionately romantic Frenchman named Simone, with special emphasis on the “-one.” At this point, he is no longer the uptight and smart one of the group. Always the more timid of the Chipmunks, Theodore takes his first steps towards loosening up and having a little fun. The biggest surprise is Alvin, who begins to act responsibly for the first time in his life. When Brittany tells him he’s starting to sound like Dave, strict and fatherly, all he can do is look up and let out a long, agonized, highly theatrical, “Nooooooooooooooooo!”
Meanwhile, Dave finds himself stranded on the same island because he went overboard when he saw the Chipmunks flying away on a kite. Quite by chance, someone came with him. Here again enters Ian Hawke (David Cross), a former record producer who now works as a cruise ship mascot. He spends almost the entire film dressed in a duck costume, blaming Dave for his failed opportunities with both the Chipmunks and the Chipettes. In a hopelessly naive example of transcendence that wore out in episodes twenty years ago A full house, we watch Ian shift from cruel and greedy in the blink of an eye…not to complete selflessness, but certainly to a much kinder person. Can they find all six bats before the volcano in the middle of the island erupts?
Children who see this movie will probably laugh at Zoe and her collection of sports balls that she talks about and has equipped with smiley faces and names. However, what they probably don’t know is that it’s a reference to Robert Zemeckis Throw away. It was released in 2000, which is a good seven or eight years before the target audience was born. They are much more likely to respond to numerous Chipmunks and Chipettes song scenes, even though only a few songs are current pop standards. In progress Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked, we hear samples from “Vacation,” “Bad Romance,” “Born This Way,” “Ain’t No Stoppin’ Us Now,” “Survivor,” “Conga,” and “Firework.” Do they actually notice the more compelling aspects of the movie, like Alvin’s approach to maturity? There are things I don’t even know the answer to.
