What is greening?

“Greening” is a term used by florists to describe the process of adding foliage to a flower arrangement. This is usually the first step in the design process, as most florists use greenery to create the shape of their design. It can be thought of as providing the foundation, structure or architecture of a design. Greening is also important because the foliage provides the support necessary for the flowers to stand in the container. In addition, when using floral foam, foliage is used to cover the mechanics of the design.

What foliage can be used for greening?

Although there are a few staples in the flower industry (lemon skin and lemon leaf), there are so many different types of leaves available today that there is no answer to this question. Many designers use herbs and greens in their designs. Foraging for green food is a great way to reduce the cost of your arrangement. Finally, cut the third stem 2/3 the length of the longest stem (you don’t want to be too precise and even a small difference in length will add dimension to your piece).

For a standard 3-sided arrangement, place the longest stem in the center of the vase and the shorter stems on either side of the longer stem. Use these three pieces as the skeleton of your layout. Cut the remaining greens to fill between the three main stems.

Now that the greens are in place, you can add your flowers, continuing to use the shape you set with your greenery as a guide for placing your flowers.

It gives architecture to your design by providing support to hold your flowers in place and covers the mechanics of the floral foam design.
