Activated Sludge Treatment Process – What Volume and Density Limits Are Ideal

The activated sludge treatment process is a long process. At different stages of this treatment, the volume of dissolved and suspended particles must be calculated periodically. In this article, I discuss acceptable volume and density limits and two indices that help determine the true volume and density of solutes.

Sludge Volume Index (SVI)

The SVI tells us how good or bad the settling ability of the mixed drink is. This settling begins only after the mixed liquid has been aerobically treated. Technically, this is the volume of activated sludge settled in 30 minutes. in the sedimentation stage of the activated sludge treatment process. This volume is expressed in milliliters. If the volume of the settled mass is small after 30 minutes. then it is considered good. However, if the SVI value is high, such as around 100, it is considered to be high in suspended solids and volatile solids. It is also thought to cause problems in the later stages of treatment. In most cases, the activated sludge sewage treatment plant operates at an SVI value of 50-75.

So it can also be used to control the quality of sludge. If a sedimentation meter (size 1000 ml) is used to measure the volume of settled solids, the SVI refers to the volume of 1 gram of solids in the settled sludge in 30 minutes. The formula used to calculate the sludge volume index is as follows:

SVI = (volume of settled sludge ml/l after 30 min. * 1000) / (MLSS, mg/l) = ml/gram

Sludge Density Index (SDI)

SDI is used in a similar manner to SVI to determine the settling capacity of sludge. But the calculation used is slightly different from SVI. SDI is calculated as follows:

SDI = (MLSS % * 100) / (% MLSS occupied volume after 30 min settling)

When calculating SVI, the volume obtained after 30 minutes is taken. is divided by MLSS, is reversed when calculating SDI. While SVI is preferably maintained between 50 and 75, SDI values are maintained between 1.0 and 2.5 during the activated sludge treatment process. It should be noted that SDI has an inverse relationship with SVI. Therefore, while low SVI values are considered good for settling, mud with high SDI has better settling ability.
