Moving Beyond the Fundamentals

I made a depressing discovery in my painting class this week,
only to have another stunner an hour later. Or rather
New to this class – it was my fourth lesson – it dawned on me that everyone has a formula for organizing their palettes. Age
the student had a color scheme that he followed very closely, and
each placed the color on their palette in exactly the same way.
I made this observation only in this class,
for I had never allowed myself the liberty of walking about
painting loft at the beginning of the class before. This class
had been going on for many years. Everyone knew everyone else,
and our instructor Clyde also knew his students for years. They ate lunch together after class, joked around while painting, and were generally one big happy family. But they scared me. They were all very New York artistic. Most of them were much older than me, each with ten to twenty years of painting experience. I was a class kid. The one with a dozen paintings under my belt. putting paint on styrofoam boards and we only put the colors we thought we needed to paint that day.
My second teacher only gave me six lessons. He hated the idea of plates, and when I showed up to my first class with a stack of Styrofoam, he automatically relegated me to the beginner bin. He insisted that I go out and buy a proper palette and order a glass cutter to cut a rectangular piece of glass to fit inside. It was the right palette—and I dare not come to class without it! And again we put the colors as needed for our particular painting of the day.
So by the time I got to Clyde’s class at the famous Silvermine
Art School in New Canaan, with a neat glass-lined palette
I felt quite confident. Several canvases assembled
under my arm, my huge art box full of tubes, brushes,
coal, Liquin, turpentine, and the like, I settled down quite well
simply. And Clyde had never discussed my palette with me. So on
in that fourth hour I finally asked Clyde about this palette
thing. He immediately walked over to Alex’s easel and brought
back to a diagram – very formal looking – of oil paints arranged in a
exact order around the rectangle, without variations and together
exact oil colors spelled out. We had to put our colors around a
rectangular palette every week we arrived in exactly that
in order, regardless of what we painted. And he hated it
the idea of glass. He wanted me to mask the paper palettes.

of American Artist magazine, which featured an inspiring article on John Asaro. I gushed over his work – he has an unusual palette of brilliant, sun-bursting colors and a fresh, bold stroke – only to get to the bottom of the article and see that he has a very precise palette that the writer prescribed. to an error. Why all the fuss about my art class and my palette? Most of you
do not paint with oils anyway!
The lesson is this: All three art teachers were
extremely successful. All were prolific painters. Everyone had
exhibited at exhibitions. And John Asaro has got international
recognition. But they had all learned the right basics. Then
they discovered their technique. Their own style.
Such is motherhood. You need to follow certain fundamentals
learn. You need to learn how to properly care for a newborn. How to clean out
his ears, suck his nose, bathe him. There are the basics
principles of good hygiene that must not only be followed
yourself, but teach your children. You have to study
the basics of good nutrition so you can provide nutritious meals for your family. You need to learn the basics of aerobic exercise and strength training so you can be a fitness model for your kids and help them start a lifelong commitment to exercise. You need to get to know certain classic readings so that you can help develop your children’s minds. I believe it is of the utmost importance that you nurture the souls of your children by giving them religious instruction and lead your children to believe in, respect and love God. It is vital that you inspire your children with great music that transforms their souls and instills in them respect for the giants that came before them.
But the techniques you use to do this can be as different as mothers and babies. Because I could instill proper form by having my daughter perform classical ballet; you can have your tap dance on your kitchen floor. I can teach my children to appreciate music by having them play the classical violin. Yours can be fiddling in your garage or banging your drum kit.
It is important that we learn from each other. Through direct
observation and reading good articles and books
we can shine great insights on creativity and motherhood
