Life Resolutions: Creating and Setting Life Goals
What do you want to be when you grow up? What are you going to do to change the world? How do you put other people off? What does success feel like to you?
These are not New Year’s resolutions; these are life decisions. Sometimes we accept the unfortunate conclusion that those childhood aspirations may not come true. How sad. We revisit our life goals and reframe them in a way that describes how we will achieve them.
Step 1 – Clarify and write down your goals. You already know that writing down goals increases the likelihood of achieving them, but few people take this step. in Now … build a great company, Mark Thompson and Brian Tracy reiterate the importance of writing down your goals and using the three-P formula. They recommend that when planning your goals, record them in the present tense (write as if you have already achieved them), make the goals positive (not “I will quit smoking,” but rather “I will be a non-smoker”), and change them. Personal, using the word “I” (“I eat healthy food,” “I keep my desk clean,” or “I raise money for the homeless”).
I might also add that goals should be both measurable and specific. “I eat two servings of fresh vegetables every day” or “I exercise for five minutes every morning.” In the grand scheme of things: “I will generate income for an orphanage in Bali every year” or “I will put a clean water well in Central Africa in 2011.”
Thompson and Tracy also remind us that once you’ve written down a list of your goals, your subconscious and superconscious will begin working to achieve them. That’s why it’s so important to write them down.
Step 2 – See the Success section. Don’t let other people’s limitations limit your opportunities. When many people set goals, they limit themselves with resources, obstacles, and objections. Often these negative perspectives come from other people. They believe the opinions of others that tell them they cannot achieve their goals. (“You can’t bring clean water to Central Africa.”) Then they give up before they even try.
Some of the saddest words ever heard are “I wish I had…” or “I could have…” Well, what’s stopping you? Are these YOUR obstacles or other people’s displaced doubts being projected onto you? As Yoda said, “There is no trying. There is only doMy fabulous friend Loretta Milo reminds her coaching clients to remove the word “try” from their vocabulary. The attempt fails. “Trying” is an attempt, not a success.
To succeed, you have to start. It means doing. If you stop before you start, you’ll never even have a chance to reach your goals. Launch, leap, leap towards your goals with complete confidence that you will achieve them. There are always naysayers and dream killers. Don’t let their pessimism get the better of you.
Step 3 – One step at a time. Each goal is achieved through a series of steps that move toward the goal. To take that dream vacation, start by researching, booking dates, booking tickets, and planning the tours you want. The journey unfolds one day at a time and one step at a time.
Take your goals and break them down into manageable steps. Then take those steps and break them down into smaller, more achievable steps.
The problem for many people is knowing where to take those first steps. If you don’t know, get help. Find a coach or consultant. Create a wisdom circle or find a group of advisors to help you. No one says you have to save the world yourself.
Life decisions are made when you decide to take action. Action takes place after examining your life and opportunities and deciding to make the most of your talents, developed skills and chosen dreams.
