Do You Really Want to Reduce Cooking Time?

Cooking is probably one of the oldest activities or perhaps household chores that man has done. I think man would have introduced the concept of cooking when he was a hunter and had to eat meat. In my mind, a caveman thousands of years ago would have spent his days hunting and trying to get food to survive. His life should have been thinking of ways he could feed himself to live. As he developed, a shift system had to come in, where he could shift and thus have time to do other things. Today, food is widely taken for granted and is an insignificant part of human life. As it stands today, I’m not quite sure it’s considered an important part of life. I think we’ve taken the concept of outsourcing and bartering a little too far when we expect someone to almost cook our food and we either finish it or, worse, just reheat it. We have found many other things to do and lost focus on the most important aspect of life – food. Well, I’m not a foodie, but the reason I believe that food is a very important part of a person’s life is because it determines the state of health of your mind and body. As the saying goes, health is wealth and it is best appreciated unhealthy!

Coming back to the old ways of cooking, I remember one of the TV shows where a celebrity chef visited India and cooked regional food in a traditional way. He cooked the meat in a pit in which there was a fire. The meat was well wrapped in a banana leaf and all the spices were loaded onto the meat. The banana leaf should keep the meat moist. A trip to my hometown reminded me of another traditional way of cooking – the clay pot! The sight of ladies outside the house cooking in clay pots over a fire tempted me to join them. Another traditional process involved fermenting some foods. For example, in South Indian cooking, certain doughs were left to ferment overnight and the bacteria that actually ferment the food aided digestion. I could go on with this traditional process, but did you notice what they have in common? Time! They all take a while to cook, but the amazing thing is that my ancestors who followed traditional cooking methods lived a long healthy life. As our lifestyle has changed, so has the way we cook. There is probably no household without a microwave oven, and few households that do not have ready meals ready to heat up or in the freezer. I’m sure many people who are busy juggling work and family will find a microwave oven a blessing. It’s complicated, and I’m no exception. I struggle to find enough time to cook good food and bought a great microwave. And what do I think about it now? Well, here’s a summary of some of the claims I saw on some websites:

1. The general advice is not to heat baby milk (breast or formula) in the microwave. The obvious reason is that uneven heating can burn the baby’s mouth, but also that the milk changes and some of the main components of the milk, such as vitamins, are lost.

2. Researchers named Hertel and Blanc have reportedly found that consumption of microwaved food caused a decrease in hemoglobin levels. They also reportedly discovered that microwaved food produces massive amounts of radiolytic compounds that cause the blood and immune system to deteriorate. Some powerful organizations reportedly banned them from publishing their findings.

3. Russian scientists have allegedly discovered that microwave energy caused changes in the cells of food, be it vegetables or meat or milk, and created carcinogenic structures. It also damages the immune system and makes it harder for the body to fight cancer cells.

4. You would think that if it is so bad for people, it would be banned. However, regulatory organizations such as the FDA are said to require more or microwave energy so that it does not leak or harm the people around it, and also one of the popular benefits of using it, which is less oil and water, so it is healthier and more nutrients are preserved.

After reading these scary findings, I think it’s suicidal to continue eating microwaved food. Better safe than sorry. So just as I’m finishing this article, I’ve decided to sell my microwave. Instead, here are some things I plan to do…

1. Plan your meals for the whole week so that I have all the ingredients stocked. Prepare if possible, such as cutting vegetables, making and chilling ginger garlic paste, making main sauce and chilling.

2. Make large batches over the weekend and freeze a few portions for me and my husband. Thaw it in the fridge in the morning when I need it and reheat it on the stove in the evening.

3. Use my convection oven whenever possible and try to reduce fat consumption by baking instead of frying.

4. Use traditional methods like cooking in a clay pot, which also enhances the flavor.

Although it’s entirely up to you if you really want to reduce cooking time in a modern way, I would refrain from including microwave recipes on my food blog.
