DSLR Photo Tip – HDR Photography, How To Do It And Why!

In today’s DSLR photo tip, we’ll cover HDR photography, how to do it, and why.

For some reason, this has become a real hot button issue among photographers. Some swear by it – others hate it!

First, what is HDR photography?

Defining HDR photography is one of those areas where it can be very detailed and full of mathematical formulas and whether or not a certain image is suitable, and on and on!

For this article, we’ll keep it simple and explain the basics. All technical types please – feel free to send me all the calculation formulas.

HDR stands for high dynamic range.

In our previous discussions about getting great sunset photos, I alluded to several issues. When you reveal the sky, the ground is generally from below and turns black. If you expose the ground, the sky is overexposed and washed out.

This is due to the dynamic range of the film or digital sensor. It can only store so much detail. This is commonly known as standard dynamic range (SDR). When details in a scene exceed the standard dynamic range, they are lost.

Consider a sunset image with a silhouette of a person. In SDR, you lose all detail in a person and that creates a flat black image.

As I mentioned earlier, some detail can be recovered by using split or graduated neutral density filters. These would hold back some of the sky light, allowing for a friendlier effect upon contact with the ground. But there is a better way.

What if we took multiple pictures? We could take a picture of the sky with perfect exposure and another of the ground with that perfect exposure – then we could combine them later in Photoshop or some other program!

Then we would have a perfectly exposed heaven AND a perfectly exposed earth!

It’s a very simple shot – two exposures. Usually there would be at least three. One of the sky settings, one of the “normal” exposure, and one of the ideal ground exposure.

I’ve seen some HDR photos that go up to 7 bracket exposures! A bracket means that you shoot at both higher and lower exposures than the “correct” exposure. You have it in parentheses.

Now let’s say you’ve taken a series of 7 exposures, from exposure to underexposure. When you combine them, you get a dynamic range that is greater than what your computer monitor can display.

This is HDR.

It has to do with bits and brightness and so on… but let’s just say there are a number of programs designed to deal with this problem and work their magic with ‘tone mapping’.

I think the point of the debate about HDR is that it is not a “clean” image created in the camera. To work in HDR you MUST have some kind of computer program to combine the images. HDR haters are the same ones who objected to retouching negatives or adding filters etc.

To my way of thinking, it’s the image that counts. If you like it, it doesn’t matter what techniques were used to get there.

The point of HDR photography, how to do it and why, is that when done well, the end result can more accurately reflect what you saw with your eyes and give you some pretty stunning results.

Like everything else, many photographers have gone too far with the technique and produced very poor results. I think this will fuel the anti-HDR crowd.

If so, try and make some simple ones yourself! Then you can check out some HDR programs and become an expert!
