Considering how much fragrance you need for your wax.

First, let me clear a few things up and maybe spoil some of the secrets of candle makers.

These are marketing terms created to sell candles.

In fact, they are not true. Most candle waxes have 1 ounce of fragrance per pound of wax. That’s it, no more. It would be like putting 16 oz in a 12 oz container, but it won’t overflow with fragrance and wax.

What happens if I put three times more fragrance than the wax can hold?

Excess scent can seep through the base and sides of the candle. This can cause major problems as most fragrances are so highly concentrated that they can burn or irritate the skin. We don’t want that to happen.

The scent binds chemically to the wax, you can’t force more scent atoms to bind to the wax. At least not with the tools we use.

So here is the formula I stick to. You can experiment on your own, but you have been warned.

Let’s try a simple example. I have one kilo of wax. Then I only need one ounce of fragrance. That’s easy enough, but what if I have a candle that uses 1 lb. 5 oz. of wax? It’s going to be fun there.

I need to convert it to a fraction of 5 oz. It’s really 5 parts out of 16 since there are 16 ounces in a pound.

So that would give us a fraction of 5/16

Now I have something to work with. I take that fraction and turn it into a whole number by dividing the bottom number 16 by the top number 5. This gives us 0.3125. I say .3

Now we know that 5 ounces equals 0.3, so we can say we have 1.3 pounds of wax. Now, using the formula of one ounce per pound, we get 1.3 ounces of scent!

How to calculate the burning time of a candle

Figuring out the candle burn time is a relatively simple task. You need to do some simple tests. First, consider your candle. Note the weight.

Next, light it and let it burn for an hour. When the hour is up, consider again. This shows how much wax was used in that hour.

For example, if we have a candle that weighs five ounces before burning, we light the candle and let it burn for an hour. The candle now weighs 4 oz. So we’ve used up one ounce of this candle in one hour. If it burns at one ounce per hour and there are 5 ounces in the candle, the candle would last about 5 hours.
