How To Date Your Fred Bear Bow
Because we have the ability to sell a wide variety of items through our eBay Drop Off Store, certain items stand out that seem to sell very well. One item that stands out is the vintage BEAR Recurve Bows.
On a recent trip out of town, we were visiting an antique store as usual and saw this repeating bow in the corner. Since we were already somewhat familiar with how well the bows had sold them to the customer, we naturally went for it. It appeared to be in excellent condition and came with a quiver and 3 different sets of arrows. The asking price was $100.00 and we ended up getting it all for $75.00.
Based on the dating procedures listed below, we determined that this was a Fred Bear Kodiak Recurve bow in excellent condition from 1965. It was a 60″ bow with a 44# draw.
After the bow arrived at our shop, we noticed that there was a smaller single quiver inside the large quiver. We were able to date it to the late 1940s based on the light embossed markings we pulled out on this smaller leather quiver.
We decided to split it into three different auctions and started all three auctions at $9.99. The results of the auctions are listed at the end of this article.

DROP YOUR FRED BEAR BOW
Over the years, bear bows have had a number of features and modifications to help narrow down the age of your bow or potential investment.
1. Serial Number: These bows usually have a script on one limb that gives the serial number along with the length and draw weight of the bow. This serial number works very well for dating Bear Bows between 1965 and 1969 when the first digit of the serial number is the year of manufacture.
For example, serial number 5L212 would be a 1965 bow.
Prior to 1965, all Bear bows were re-serialized every month, making it nearly impossible to date these bows by serial number alone. The “K” series of serial numbers (such as KZ9672) began in 1970.
2. Patent Mark: Most of the BEAR bows we sell have a printed logo and US patents with the date CANADA 1953. This date printed on all bows made between 1953 and 1972 is simply the date. patent for a working repeating limb and has nothing to do with the actual model year.
3. Stickers and screen printing: In 1948 there was first a small Running Bear sticker and then in mid-1953 it was replaced by a large Standing Bear sticker. The large Standing Bear sticker also has the words “Glass Powered Bow” below the standing bear.
The large Standing Bear decal was used until 1955, when it was replaced by silk-screened bow identification. By 1956, screen printing appeared on all bows.
4. All Wood vs. Laminate: If your bow is ALL wood (no lamination) then your bow must have been made before mass production started in 1949.
- If ANY wooden bow has a stamp that says “Bear Products” in some form, it would have been made before the early to mid 40’s.
- If it is stamped “Bear Archery” it would have been made AFTER the early to mid 40’s and BEFORE 1949.
- Wooden bows with a small “Running Bear” sticker can also be dated to 1948
5. Leather grip: ALL Bear bows had leather grips until 1959. In 1959, the Kodiak Special removed the leather grip, and in 1961 the Kodiak did the same, as did the Grizzly in 1964.
6. Coin Medallion: Beginning in 1959, all Bear bows featured a metal coin medallion of one type or another. Below are approximate date ranges for the type of coin used.
Copper coin – 1959
Aluminum – 1960-1961
Tin – 1962
Brass – 1963 – 1970
Nickel-silver – 1971-1972
ALL coins were flush with the wood until 1972. In late 1972, the coin was raised above the surface of the bow and was both gold and chrome plated plastic and is still used in bear bows today.
7. Manufacturer Location: In 1978, Bear moved all production and offices to Gainesville, Florida. If your bow has Gainesville on it, it was made after 1978
8. Bow model: Check the bow model. Below is an annual production chart of the most popular bear bows.

————————————————– —
Our eBay Results: Within 6 hours of listing our 1965 Bear Bow from $9.99 it had already reached $152.50 which was exciting but not surprising based on our research. Surprisingly, it held at $152.50 for the next 6 days. On the last day with 8 minutes left, the price was up to $182.50 with over 40 followers. Usually with these types of auctions we tend to update and update and update the auction until the end to keep track of the bid, but we were busy writing new entries and forgot. When we remembered to check back on the auction, it had ended and ended at $282.55
The other 2 arrow and arrow auctions sold for a total of $80.00. So our initial investment of $75.00 ended up with $362.55 in sales at the antique store. That was a profit of almost $300.00 (minus gas and eBay fees of course).
