Have you ever heard someone say something like, “I haven’t felt motivated lately,” or, “I’ll do it as soon as I feel motivated enough?” I know I am and, to be honest, I am guilty of using these and similar phrases myself. You see, I, like many others, believed that action only comes through motivation. This means that I have to wait for the so-called “feeling that moves me” before I achieve anything.

Well, I was wrong. And I believe I was wrong for two reasons. First, I didn’t see the “big picture” – the reason why the “thing” had to be done in the first place and how that “thing” related to other things I wanted to achieve, do, enjoy, etc. .

And secondly because, to be honest, I just didn’t know how I operated. Oh sure, I liked to believe I was in control, but why couldn’t I motivate myself when I really had so much control?

Motivation is really like creativity or any other drive or impulse. We can wait for it to magically appear, which it often does, and often at the most inopportune times (remember all the great ideas you’ve had while driving down the road without a laptop or tape recorder to capture them? Or how about the times when we’re motivated to do something cool that our friends or family would really enjoy, but everyone else’s schedule doesn’t fit our “moment to shine.” Remember?

No, the secret to motivation is understanding that it cannot be relied upon to create action. It does, but not in a predictable and usable way. Without an unpredictable variable like luck, coincidence, and the like, relying on an emotional impulse like motivation to drive us forward is like waiting for food to show up in your cupboards without actually going to the store to buy it.

So how do we create motivation? The ironic answer lies in the question itself. How we create. . .?

To create something we act – we have to do something. And actions themselves come in three forms – thoughts – speech – and of course physical actions. It is here that we find the necessary ingredients to “create” the necessary motivation.

How? Let’s take a look at the grocery scenario and ask another question: “What motivates us to go grocery shopping in the first place?

Most people would answer, “I have no food in the house.” But a ninja looking at the bigger picture would ask another question that focuses on “why”. Why don’t I have groceries at home? Because I or someone else ate them. The activities that precede the need for motivation are precisely those that “cause” the emergence of motivation. Once we understand this little secret, we can use the same formula to do it over and over again.

You say groceries are one thing, but what about my goals. After all, groceries are essential, my goals are just dreams, wishes and desires.

Herein lies the answer to my first problem. Remember?

Right. An inability to “see” (a mental activity) how my purpose was a necessary part of living the life I wanted to live. Because when I saw how important it was to achieve my goal – how I couldn’t achieve the other things I wanted to do – I got all the motivation I could muster to do what needed to be done.

So, it is true that motivation leads to action, but only after, and I mean only after, it has been caused by previous action. There must be something in place, a thought or dream, a promise (verbal action) or something to be dealt with (such as an attacker’s attack) that requires action NOW before motivation is a driving force for us.

Can you imagine using the same excuse for not achieving the desired goal when facing an attacker? I really don’t think “I’m not motivated to do anything right now” is going to make him go away – is it?
